Talking 1960 dometic pilot

Hello-
We are in the process of restoring a 1960 overlander, which has all of the original appliances . We were able to get the fridge going (actually got hte temp down to 10 degrees), the problem starts when we turn down the thermostat. When you turn the thermostat down, the flame goes to standby as it should, but only for about 5 minutes, then it goes out. We don't have a manual to go with the fridge and are reluctant to start taking things apart without some guidance, since everything else works great.
Any manuals or guidance out there????

The VAC website has some older manuals. Here is a link to a 65 fridge.

The thermocouple at low flame is not providing sufficient current to keep the control activated. This can be from several causes:
  • Thermocouple not fully in low flame
  • Low flame too weak
  • Weak thermocouple
After being on high flame for a period, it may take a while for the junction to cool down endough to drop the control.

I would first remove the jet and clean it with alcohol and compressed air (don't poke anything through the jet). Then relight the box and insure that the low flame fully covers the thermocouple. You may need to bend the thermocouple a bit to achieve this. If all above fails, then thermocouples are cheap and easy to replace.
