QC problems

Gene: Defective items.
Took delivery 14 Mar 2009. Cut wire from Duel switch to Atwood heater.Would not operate electric mode. Missing interior brake pad, destroyed caliper/rotor,lost all fluid and breaking capability. Missing three wing nuts on stabilizer pads( discovered missing before I lost three pads).Discovered five year old model refrig installed, was on recall ( had to drive 100 mile plus for fix) Breaker to AC constantly tripping ( I replaced breaker) hopefully it will hold untill checked out. As noted, lower frig comp problem. Leaking holding tank seal/close mode. Wife problems: She did not want to trade 2008 HR for AS. It was I who pushed the issue.Boy do I constantly hear about that conversation.

woppa, sorry to hear about your issues. I would encourage you to read and post your exp to the overall QC threads. Here is a link (below) to 2010, however, it has links to models all the way to 2004.

I'm pretty much at a loss for the installation of a 5 year of fridge. Many of the items you've described are supplier issues (Airstream does not make the fridge, axles, stabilizers or AC unit), however in many of the cases, simple review of the systems from the QC folks may have caught some of the issues. One for sure would have been the water heater and nearly dropping off stab jacks.

I can say that you are not alone in your punch list of things gone wrong. I had 2-3 pages of odds and ends (total of 19 items). The factory solved most of them, yet every so often a few things still come up from time to time on my 5 year old Safari. Reading the threads linked you'll clearly see that, but I can say that outside of the corrosion issue, most of the items that we late model buyers fine on punch lists are correctable and at some point, we have trailers that are fairly problem free. You basically bought the Ferrari of trailers. Flashy, unique unit, but few and far between service and from what you have already seen, significant maint.

Airstream has a 2 year warranty but wouldn't you suspect they'd pass costs back to Dometic on warranty issues? The fridge & its innards are all Dometic. Jackson Center takes them industry stock, right off the pallet. If an Airstream dealer is not nearby I would probably check with a Dometic service center - Customer Support - Dometic.

To do the 45-minute recall last year I checked for Dometic service centers; then called up a local SOB dealer and they were very willing to do this for me. That didn't put a hole in my day like driving the 75 minutes to the Twin Cities Airstream dealer would have -- and I'm closer to one of those than most.

I haven't kept count of all my QC issues, but it's gotta be around 40 or more. No brake problems, fridge works perfectly. Well, actually, when I adjusted the brakes last month, it seemed they may have never been adjusted properly since they didn't do any braking after only 9,000 miles.

I'm amazed they would install a 5 year old fridge. It must have been in a dusty corner of the factory forgotten and lonely. They certainly owe you a new unit. This is an Airstream warranty issue I think because this is an out of date unit and it also doesn't work. A non-Airstream dealer would not have any obligation to replace it with a new one, though they might; hard to say. If the Airstream dealer won't cooperate, call Airstream directly and tell them you've checked the numbers and some mistake must have been made and you want to a new unit for your very expensive Classic and besides being out of date, it doesn't work. Good luck woppa, this is another damn learning experience.

The strange this is we get attached to these temperamental Airstreams. Eventually even your wife may, I hope.

Update

I WISH TO THANK THE FOLKS WHO OFFERED SOME INTERESTING POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS TO MY FRIG ISSUES. I contacted Randy, at AS customer service who assisted in clearing the warranty issue with Dometic. A certified Dometic tech will work on the unit tomorrow. He is a mobile tech (thank goodness)! "The story of the 5 year old frig in a new unit".When I arrived at the dealership to take delivery, the installed frig in my AS would not cool. The service tech transferred a comparable frig from another unit to mine. I did not realize the date of manufacture issue until I attempted to register the unit with Dometic. They would not accept my request for registration due to the manufactured date of the unit. AS finally was able to have the unit registered for warranty purposes. I will take the extended warranty program. The Dometic tech will also address the AC problem. Woppa4
