Question 1973 Safari

I've noticed some of the 73 Safari's have single axles where as others have tandem. Was this an option in 73? (tandem axles)

where did you see a single-axle 73 safari?

I can't imagine how that could have ever been an "option", considering the impact that a second axle has on both the exterior AND interior.

The vintage airstream archive shows a "74 safari" that has a single axle; I'm wondering if this is a mistake, and its actually a 21" globetrotter. I've seen a sales brochure for 1974, and it shows all the available models...the only option in a 23' safari was "twin beds", or "double beds".

Single Axle Safari

The unit is being advertised as a 23ft Safari. Description by the seller says it is a single axle...and yes, from the pic, it is single axle.
1973 Safari 23ft

Also in the VAC Photo Archives there is a Single axle 1972,
1972 Safari and a Tandem axle 1971, 1971 Safari . Hmm?

You know, one of my pet peeves is how sloppy I find people are w/ details. like this one.

Ask the seller for the serial number that is stamped on the trailer...should be on a plate outside the door, and also on the front wall of the trailer near the street side corner. That will reveal what this is.

PO of my trailer had the wrong serial number on the bill of sale they prepared. it was on the title wrong...hence it had been registered wrong for who knows how many years.

I noticed the same thing about the '72 on the vintage airstream site. I've never seen a '72 in person; I have seen a couple of '71's, and there are several 71-owners on this site. all their pictures show a tandem-axle. It seems odd that A/S would go back and forth on this from year to year...but I suppose it is possible.

They had single axle and double axle Safaris. I don't know what the reason is, but I have seen 70's Safaris both ways. The newest one i have seen with a single axle was a 1974.

Here is a pic of a 69 single axle, which has a similar body like the 70's ones.

yeah, I know they did exist at one time...but I'm saying that I doubt they did in 1973. it just seems odd that they would change the model to a double...then back to a single...then back to a double...then back to a single.

I looked at a single axle Safari when I lived in Missouri, it was a 1972. Dinette was on the right, galley on the left, and a gaucho in the front. The badge said "SAFARI". Could have been a custom order of that model.

My friend has a single axle 1970 23' Safari. My understanding was the 70 model was the last year of the single axle. But, that's not to say there wasn't single axle Safari's in later years.

Ha! I was WRONG!

(like that's never happened before )

I was just browsing through my service manual for '73, and it does mention a single axle 23' safari. There are 2 diagrams of the chasis; one labelled "single axle, 21 and 23'", and the other labelled "tandem axle, 23-31'". Also in the detailed load chart (all the weights and so forth), it lists 2 entries for 23': single axle, and tandem axle.

So that'll teach anyone that hasn't already learned to never listen to me!

Thumbs up 73 Safari single axle

That's what is so great about this forum. KNOWLEDGE!!! Somebody, somewhere will have the answer....Chuck, you have made this a great day because we have learned something. Now...could you post the weights and specs for the single and tandem axled 23 footers.

Dave

I'll look it up in the manual when I get home tonight...don't have it here at work. In the mean time, for "ball-park-estimating" purposes...I don't think the numbers were far away from those of the tandem axle, which are roughly 3400 empty/5500 gvw.

I just checked airstream's website, and they don't list a distinction...no mention of single/double axle. (part of my confusion before, to be honest). they do list the "twin" and "double" models, at 3410 and 3450, respectively. Interesting...the 21' GT weighs in at 3380, a mere 30lbs less than the 23' twin...but with a much lighter tounge weight of 420, vs 580 for the safari.

Ok. here is the weight chart, if I can get it to attach. On closer examination, it seems that the numbers on Airstream's "weights" pdf on their website is referencing the weight of the single-axle, and they left out the tandem altogether. (this is what I mean about the sketchy details ). looks like my trailer is a bit heavier than I thought.

not sure if this will be legible...lets see....
