In theory, what you propose should work, but you are still likely to encounter an issue with the pin-out that Airstream utilized in 1970 not matching today's industry standard for either the round-pin nor blade-type connectors. I am attaching a pdf file containing the pin-out utilized by Airstream in 1970 that may be of help. The illustration below identifies the current industry standard for the pin-out on the round-pin connectors:



I am fairly certain that you will find that a modification may be necessary for the trailer end to match the adapter.

I've got the original manual for my 1970 Safari, and it has the wiring diagram including the pinout for the tow vehicle. It's in my trailer and I can't get to it for a few days, but if you want to wait I could scan it in a week or so.

I got the trailer back from the shop and grabbed the manual. Here is the wiring diagram for the connector. I hope the iPad photo is readable enough!
