If you've ever been in Michigan "The Lodge"
Yep my worst road in Michigan vote is for the lodge, aka M-10 (thank goodness I don't work in D-town)!Used to be the potholes on Southfield Fwy were #1 in my worst road book!
In Louisiana 10 was pretty bad pre katrina, of course the causeway over Lake Ponchatrain with the expansion joints wasn't fun either, but New Orleans was worth visiting for sure--time to rebuild her!!

Between Shiprock and Gallup. I've never been so happy to see Gallup. Too bad because the scenery is great.

Yep, thats the spot. I used to live next to Sierra Madre. Guess my brain is scrambled today.

Any road near Amarillo. Same smell as mentioned above. Although the folks from here say it is the smell of money. Since I don't get the money it smells like bovine feces to me. :-)
cheers, bill b.

Our worst road is 405 thru LA, had to check my teeth to make sure the fillings were still in there.
Did go by a pig farm in Nebraska that made Harris Ranch smell sweet! (I think I80?)

Hwy 90 from New Orleans through Boutte, Louisiana was called the Death Highway for the longest time, not due to the condition of the road, but rather to the people driving it. Folks would drive to N.O., get drunk, and try to drive home. The highway has a mounded median with a curb, and if you weave over and hit the curb at speed, it will flip your car into oncoming traffic.
I think it is redone now, thank goodness. I had several high-school friends killed on that road.

Hi, I was going to say the 405 through L.A. too, but before they rebuilt the 5 through Santa Ana, it was so bad, it made the 405 seem like silk.

I don't think I ever went more than 25 mph, and usually that seemed recklessly fast. I had (very) briefly considered taking our trailer that way, as the map said it was very scenic, and recommended to travel. It would break a snake's back to try to travel this route

This road even has a name 'Tail of the Dragon' and 'Deals Gap'
World famous in the biker circles and sport cars...
Has at least two web sites...
Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap and Cherohala Skyway, Graham Co, NC
dealsgap.com, Deal's Gap, North Carolina information guide, Dragon motorcycle tour, Great Smoky Mountains
Remember Harrison Ford jumping off that dam in 'The Fugitive' ?
It was there.
Best to go around, then come back after you have set up your TT at campsite.
Would be zero fun pulling one up, or wearing out your brakes going down.

Just a gentle reminder that the north east end is not the entire state. Much of the roadway in the southern part of the state could be rated fair to good.

While I can see where it would be a fascination for sports cars and motorcycles, I can attest that it is no fun trying to drive that route in an extended cab long bed pickup.

Twisting hairpin turns over Donner Summit where if you dared to look down the side of the mountain you would see hundreds of feet down the remains of vehicles that had missed turns. As part of President Eisenhower's transcontinental highway plan US 40 gave way to the construction of I 80 and completed in time for the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley. I 80 was state of the art travel then. I think the engineer's thought it would last forever. It is now beyond forever. A-A-H, GOOD old days.

I-40 E. of Dallas. The Texas Tech. Engineers that layed that 50 miles of concrete were mad at the other winning team, their mother-in laws, and the state senators that live in the area.

Your Worst Road
It has to be I-25 just north of Denver Colorado. The road is so bad, it's like riding a roller coaster. The truck and trailer buck like a wild horse. I avoid that stretch of highway whenever possible. There are lots of accidents on that stretch also.

Real close to home
We can travel thousands of miles and the worst road will often be the one closest to home. The last three miles of gravel is often an adventure, but the last 300 feet from the stream to the driveway is really scary after a downpour.
Living in the boonies ... often heaven, sometimes hell.

you'll be happy to know it has had major rebuilding over the past few years, mostly on the bridge end. it will still crawl during peak traffic but your kidneys will still be intact. by the time it is finished the bridge will get replaced with one of the following:
a) a new bridge
b) a tunnel
c) two new bridges
d) a bridge with two decks and rail service
e) a lot of talk and no action until it falls down
and will take twice the time and cost of what was budgeted.

Not sure of what you mean by 40 east of Dallas - 40 goes through Arkansas into Oklahoma City, through Amarillo and into NM. 30 and 20 go through Dallas.
30 east of Dallas is not too bad, but I have not driven 20 east of Dallas in a while. It wasn't the best the last time I did, perhaps 5 years ago?

Bob- I used to commute that section of highway everyday from my home to the office. We were on it just the other week on our way to Grey Fox and they have repaved some sections. I had even traveled it once in a Jeep, OUCH! We have also done 28 in NC. Forget it! Another real favorite was RT-14 in Wyoming up and over the Big Horn (9,666 ft.). I wasn't expecting that one!
