Yellowstone to Sheridan, WY
We'll be traveling with our AS from Yellowstone to Sheridan later this month and would like some advice regarding the best and/or quickest route. Highway 14 looks like it would be very scenic, but very twisty. Highway 16 a little to the south looks like a possibility, too. Are there any alternatives? Any local knowledge or experience would be greatly appreciated.

A related question... Any feedback regarding Buffalo Bill State Park just west of Cody?

HiHo,
I read your thread (which I enjoyed very much) and I see your point. That's the kind of information I was looking for. But that does leave me scratching my head about how to get from Cody to Sheridan.

Highway 16 is the lesser of the two twisty, mountainous roads. Highway 14 alternate is more scenic. Hwy 14 from Greybull (pronounced Grable by the locals) up to Burgess Junction isn't as bad as 14 alt. From Burgess Junction to Sheridan is mostly downhill with good clearance around turns, although a few steep places.

OH, and Buffalo Bill State Park is on the Buffalo Bill Reservoir, gravel, no trees, and the wind can really blow. There are a couple of RV parks in Cody, the Ponderosa being the nicest. There is another on the east side of town near the airport.

JackMac,
Thanks for the helpful information. It sounds like Highway 16 might be the road of choice. And thanks for the head's up on Buffalo Bill State Park. I'll research the RV parks in Cody.

16 would be my choice; all of them are semi-nasty, especially alt 14. Views are incredible!

If you come out of the northeast gate at Cooke City, 212 down to State 296, Chief Joseph Hwy to 120 and then into Cody. A beautiful drive. If you go 14 through Lovell you will go by the Wild Mustang preserve.
