Hi

We've already been back to JC twice for brake rebuilds .... maybe that's not the best excuse

One rather important note: I very much do *not* have a set of lift kit parts along with me on the trip ....

What happened with your brakes that you had to have JC rebuild twice?

Hi

One hub locked up and overheated last year. Luckily we were just north of the factory at the time. When we went in for our "end of warranty" stuff I had them check the other wheels. The other three got rebuilt at that time.

We visited Montana and Yellowstone last September. It was fantastic. Left Tennessee and stayyed on Lake Hebgen on the lake, was great. It is at the west gate to Yellowstone.
5 days was enough for the park. Spent 3 days in Montana as the RV site was close to both areas. Best visit for us. We didn’t have an airstream at that time but a toy hauler. Came home and bought on trade a 30 foot airstream. Perfect!

Yellowstone terribly disappointing.
Neat water fountains and some golly-g things to see, but there is so much better things to see than this park. Drive through in a day or two then visit other more scenic places.
UT has a lot of super-scenic parks which are easier to navigate and camp at.
If you like the letter "Y" then consider Yosemite, it is so beautiful, but might have some road closures by your date.

I would drive west, then hit Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Arches, then east into CO and down the million dollar hwy and see other beautiful sites there. More bang for your buck

I was there a couple of years ago and Fishing Bridge CG was closing down mid September.... and the day before a icy storm was moving in from the north! We did not stop on our way south till we got to AZ! There are commercial CG around the periphery of Yellowstone NP which are at lower elevation and their season is open much longer...

Went there in Sept 2 years ago on a month long trip from NC. We booked campsites around Yellowstone and the Tetons well in advance but still could get nothing in either Park. We stayed at Lake Hebgen 13 miles north of West Yellowstone in a very nice commercial campground right on the lake. The Park itself was jammed even for just driving around to see the sights. We then dropped down to the Tetons on the Idaho side and stayed at a park in Victor ID just over Teton Pass from Jackson. We did not take the trailer over Teton Pass but could have although some people don’t like to. Jackson was so crowded we just drove thru town on the way to the park but didn’t stop. Be prepared for weather it snowed several inches in Victor in mid Sept and it was dicey getting over the pass. The Idaho side is very low key compared to Jackson with a couple nice little breweries right in Victor. Happy Trails.

Anybody got info on going this time of year. (Gap Season)
I have not traveled there with our Airstream, so heed warnings about where to stay. Having said that, September is a fantastic time to see YellowStone and Grand Tetons. Several years ago, my wife and I spent our anniversary out there in mid-September and it is one of the most memorable National Park visits we have made. Lack of crowds is the big plus, but passable roads everywhere is probably as important.

Having camped in Yellowstone at some point almost every summer and/or fall for over 50 years, here are my recommendations. At that time of year, I believe the best bet within the park is Mammoth campground near the northwest entrance. It is first come/first served, and with its lower elevation, is warmer. It works fine for our 2014 Flying Cloud 25FB. No hookups, btw. And it is reasonably close to the Lamar Valley (America's Serengeti), for the best game watching. If you miss getting there in the morning you may miss getting a site, so what we often do is stay one night in a private campground in Gardiner, just 5 miles away outside the park, so we can get to Mammoth the next morning and grab a good site. We like Rocky Mountain RV Park in Gardiner for that purpose (full hookups). All in all, perfect for touring the northern half of the park.

For the southern half of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park, at that time of year we too like Gros Vente Campground. Again, lower elevation for warmer weather that time of the year. Usually many sites available at least all morning long. One loop does have hookups.

Trust me on this.

Yellow Stone

We went to Yellow Stone Two years ago right after Harvey around the 20th of Sept and got snowed in part of the park was closed of and it was very hard to find places to stay. They were also starting to shut the park down for the season. If it were me I would go right after Labor Day

Arrive at Mammoth CG in the Park by 9:00 am and you’ll get a site. No hook ups but generators are allowed

Hi

9AM ? But what about my second cup of coffee ?

I've often wondered about getting a simple pop up tent just to hold a site. Hop out / snap it in place and go do whatever. Come back with the AS when it's more practical to do. Indeed some campgrounds are better than others in terms of grabbing sites so this isn't always a requirement.

Typically, a folding chair also works. Just make sure you come back that afternoon and camp there. Trouble is some campers reserve for themselves or their friends for a few days, but don't always occupy the first night...some of us other "campers" get ticked when that happens since other folks can't find a place, yet that "reserved" site is not occupied. Not an easy solution to this problem and it sure frustrates "legit" campers....the park service gets their money, sure, but not really fair to those other campers who just drove across the US and are shut out, IMHO...

We typically stay at a NF campground or dispersed camping outside the NP on the day we arrive in the area and get up early the next AM and drive into the NP to get a first-come first-served NP campsite.

yep; us too...heading to Apgar tomorrow morning in fact...lots of folks have to get back to work on Monday! Nice thing about MT is there are lots of choices for free to stay for the night in the state lands where the road has room or where there are pull outs. Hungry Horse dam for example when we are going to West Glacier works out pretty consistently...
