Yellowstone hikes
We are heading to Yellowstone in a month and are looking for any experience with hikes within the park. We'll be looking for several easy to moderate 5-10 mile hikes (day trips) and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. We will be staying in the Madison campground on the west side if that makes any difference. Thanks!

YNP hikes
Hi,
I have the honor to be a Yellowstone Park Ranger this summer so here are some recommendations:
South of Madison you can turn the Fairy Falls trail into a 9 mile hike by adding the Imperial geyser segment and then the long loop back to the trailhead. Fairy Falls is a 200' high sheer fall with a lot of small critters. Imperial geyser, while not predictable, is often erupting in a minor fashion and occasionally in a major fashion.
North of Madison, at Mammoth Hot Springs, you can couple the Beaver Ponds and Sepulcher trails to make an 11 mile hike with a lot of wildlife.
The Pelican Valley hike, while nominally about 7.6 miles RT, can be extended to as many miles as you might wish, all the way to the Lamar Valley but, if you intend to camp overnight in the back country, you will need a permit.
Most of the front country hikes, i.e. Riddle Lake, run 5-6 miles which, at this altitude, is enough for most people.
Hope you enjoy the park,
Mike

Hi from GA. . . Good tips from Mike, we loved YENP in June & did some of those hikes. The Yellowstone Association sells a packet of good material which includes a hiking guide & maps. And TAKE BEAR SPRAY,(really) bears are everywhere this year. Regards, Craig p.s., it was 34 degrees this morning at Lake Yellowstone !

If you want to experience a portion of Yellowstone that few get to see, go south from West Yellowstone to Ashton, Idaho and then go east to the Park entrance at Bechler. Take the Bechler River trail up to the falls. Best fishing in the entire park and very remote. Not a hard trail and not very steep, but a beautiful part of Yellowstone not may get to see.

Does anyone have experience with Madison Campground (in Yellowstone) - specifically are there fire pit rings for campfires?

at 34 degrees are you concerned with holding tanks and water lines freezing? what precautions should be taken?

Brad,
Be aware of the bears. I saw in the newspaper yesterday that a grizzly bear just killed a hiker in Yellowstone. An old rule - always hike with someone slower than you, someone you can outrun.
Hope you and Karen enjoy the trip. If you have time and haven't been there, we recommend seeing the Grand Tetons.
See you at the Canopener...hopefully!
Russ

We were at Madison 2 weeks ago...nice campground...one of our favs at YS.
They do have rings, tables, etc.
Be sure to catch a Ranger talk or 2 at night...very informative.
Hikes in YS;
Easy
Fairy Falls (North of Biscuit Basin/South of Madison- Fountain Flat Drive)
Lone Star Geyser (Old Faithful area)
Riddle Lake (Grant Village area)
Ice Lake & Wolf Lake (West of Canyon Village)
Egret Lake (West of Canyon Village)
Moderate
Mallard Pond (start from Old Faithful parking lot and walk past the mud pots,
along the trail)
Beaver Ponds Loop Trail (Mammoth Area)
Wolf Lake Loop Trail (Norris Area)
Little Firehole Meadows (West from Biscuit Basin, water fall to swim under on the way to meadows)
Difficult
Delacy Trail to Shoshone Lake
Shoshone Lake trail from Lone Star Geyser. 8.5 m
Union Falls
Mary Mountain trail
Heart Lake
Elephant Back loop trail
Get your bear spray outside of the park. REI sells it. You will pay more in the park...
We had temps down around 30 deg F. It should warm up nicely durring the day...I wouldn't worry about freezing pipes, etc...
Let me know if I can give any more specifics...

Looks you've got a great list of possible hikes. I lived up there for 3 and a half years so spent quite a bit of time fly fishing in the park. Please do heed the warnings about the bears. I would not hike the park with a can of bear spray that I had tested. I've had several grizzly encounters there whole fishing and from what I hear my friends who are still there is the bears have been pretty active this year.
Have a great time! It's a beautiful and very interesting park.

If you think it may freeze:
Use the furnace for heat. It will provide warm air to the fresh water and holding tanks.
If you are hooked up to water, turn off the water at the spigot, unhook and drain the hose.
That simple.
One time when in -10F. we had to use a hair dryer to blow hot hair up the tank dump pipe, because ice had formed against the inside of the valve, freezing it shut. It took about 5 mins.
