I'm going to buy a cabin on the east slope of the Saw Tooth range in Idaho, so I will have a grand stand seat while still being able to breath.

It turns out the heating was due to a bear who had stolen and eaten a 5 gallon pot of chili and then sat down on the road.
Anyone want a cabin in Idaho?

That road would never have overheated if the bear had started to breath pure nitrogen prior to the onset of his distress. I know that to be true, because I read it on the internet.
In fact, had he drank liquid nitrogen, the ensuring explosion would have actually cooled the road.

its absolutely stunning that we exist on this tiny layer of crust essentially floating around on a friggin ball of magma.
we visited st. lucia back in like 2009..places like that too (as I recall) really could just blow in a short (relatively) time period....
We live such short lives as opposed to geological time....
I guess I know so little about yellow stone, but it just seems completely mind numbing that the roads just up and turn to "soup"

Yeah.....,
and I'm pretty sure it was spiked heavily with tequila and cayenne pepper.
Now that Rudolf has retired, Santa has offered the bear and I the two front spots in his team the next foggy Christmas, but we have to agree to fly backwards.

Nice! Blaming an innocent bear for stealing your chili
I heard rangers attributed the melted road to an unidentified 31 foot Airstream that had a dump valve malfunction and 'deposited' some corrosive material on the pavement... must have been some extra fine chili

Volcanology is a very fascinating, but to me rather unsettling subject to read about.
I was lucky enough to be sitting on our south facing deck in Enumclaw, Washington, on May 18th 1980, when Mt St Helens exploded. I could not actually see the mountain, but had a very good view of the huge rising plume of ash. I also saw a very fast moving arc shaped shock wave travel overhead in a high thin layer of cirrus that happened to be there.

Wow!
Multiply by 10,000 and that would be the Yellowstone caldera eruption

I heard from my wife's father-in-law that it was the reflection of the sun off of a polished Airstream that melted the road.

That's an even better and more believable story than mine.
This part is true (and off the subject):
About 8 months ago, I decided to, as much as practical, eliminate from my diet all food that has had salt added to it. In the process of bringing flavor back to my food, I have discovered all sorts of spices and no salt added seasonings. Therefor an analysis of our holding tank contents might show show pretty potent stuff.

Whew, glad we just made the trip from Denver to Yellowstone and the Tetons - imagine that sticky road would have messed up our "Stream of Consciousness"!

I just hope the overdue eruption holds off for another 100 years or so. I would like to get back there again. It is a fascinating and awe inspiring place. For some Yellowstone stories and trivia, see if your local library has a copy of "Death in Yellowstone" by Whittlesey. A collection of stories about the ways that people have managed to end their time through their own fault or nature's while in the park.
