We plan to be in Yellowstone sometime in mid-September. I don't know the exact day because we don't like to follow a rigid itinerary. Thus, we try not to make reservations unless it is necessary.

Does anyone have any experience in arriving at Yellowstone at that time of year without reservations? We don't need hookups, but a nearby dump station would be good. For this reason I would like to try the Madison campground if possible.

We've got the same plan, I'll look for your rig. We did the same trip about 4 years ago, and had our pick of spaces in the Madison campground, no reservations, soon after Labor Day weekend. Great time to be there!

We live in Utah and go to Yellowstone a lot. Sometimes the campgrounds are filled up is September, but mostly not a problem finding a place. The big thing you can do to improve your chances of getting a spot - and a good spot - is the time of day you pull in. Too early and other folks haven't pulled out, and later in the day they fill up again. Getting there from 10 to 2 is good timing if you can make it work.

While the crowds begin to drop off after Labor Day - it's also at that time that they begin closing some campgrounds, and shutting down some of the 'loops' in the campgrounds that are still open.

But even in the summer when crowds are at the peak we've almost always found a spot if we get there in that middle of the day time frame

We just left Yellowstone earlier this week. We had reservations at the RV park since it was labor day weekend. I don't recommend the RV park if you can go without hookups. The campgrounds looked much nicer and I saw a few dump stations. Check out time was 11am so arrival after that should guarantee a good spot. I didn't see Madison but we did drive through Bridge Bay, which looked much nicer than our RV park.

Enjoy! We had an amazing time!
