Our award so far for worst road goes US Route 89 from Flagstaff to Marble Canyon. Sections of that road were so rough and full of pot holes that it caused significant damage to cabinets and their doors. Just awful. Scenery was amazing, but the road...OMG, the road. Mad Maxx has nothing on that road.

Second prize goes to the section of I-10 that Protag called out, from the Atchafalaya Basin to Lafayette. That was bad, but not as awful as US-89.

I see Protagonist's I-10 in Louisiana, and raise him I-20 through Bossier City and Shreveport, LA.

oh, no, it's I95 / the Cross Bronx Expressway section in New York!

the perfect storm of a poor roadway all the time + ridiculous stop & go traffic most of the time + kamikaze drivers + perpetual construction projects....

ymmv.

oh, and then there's the high tolls for the bridge crossings connecting to either end of the CBE, just adding insult to injury....

I agree and vote for I-70 between Indy and Dayton, over I-10, I-20 and I-5. This stretch of interstate is horrible.

If I were to nominate a single state it would have to be Indiana. I feel sorry for folks in Hoosierland. We were "lucky" to be going through right after the I65 bridge collapse which routed the Indy-Chicago Northbound traffic further west. The Indiana Tollroad "contracting out" episode should serve as a lesson for any other state that thinks they are doing their citizens a "favor" by letting a corporate entity run a highway.

I 70 from KC to St Louis isn't much better. We avoid most Interstates when possible, but I'd go way out of the way to avoid I 70 across Missouri.

I agree, that IS a bad stretch! But that's much easier to go around by taking the I-220 that loops around to the north of the Shreveport/Bossier City. That's why I didn't rank it as high.

The alternative to the stretch of I-10 east of Lafayette is US-190, which isn't much better than I-10, especially around the one-stoplight town of Port Barré.

My vote is I35 just north of Oklahoma City. From the side of the road you can hear the semis at 70 MPH hitting the concrete slabs: Wham, wham, wham, wham,.. Even solo it's almost unbearable.

A lot if the highways are terrible but what is bad is that even when the road surface is good, the bridges are bad everywhere...especially where it meets the roadway pavement. Experienced this in NC, SC and Va just last week where the roads were great and the bridges not so good and sometimes dangerous. Slow down-bridge ahead.

I95 Boston to DC.

By far, the worst of the worst. The trafic and drivers are on crack.

I-75 is the worst for congestion from Michigan to Florida and rude drivers.
