wireless broadband internet ....

I have verizon wireless broadband internet and i was wondering if anyone else has it.
if so....how does it do in the AS ?

i dont know anything about what affects cell signals but i was wondering if the aluminum airstream made the signal harder to get..... since the broadband works off of cell towers like a phone.

thanks.

Your Airstream's construction does not effect your BBI... If your cell phone works your BBI works!

FYI... I would look at a wireless card that works on both 3G and WIFI... More and more areas have WIFI and the card that I uses tells me if WIFI is available and the connection is way faster! I also think that my Mac works way faster than my IBM for mobile data gathering!

FWIW the Airstream can cause signals to be weaker because of the metal. One thing I do to help is use an extender cable to put the USB aircard in a window to improve the signal strength. Some aircards will take an external antenna too.

I use a Verizon air card which is PCMCIA when on the road. I place the laptop next to a window for the best results. The signal can vary by several bars depending on my location inside the trailer. The best results are always outside.

I have Verizon wireless broadband. It works very well, and the coverage areas seem to be continuously expanding. A few years back, I used an external antenna connected to a signal amplifier to enhance the signal strength. Then, over time, the amp became less necessary, so I just used the external antenna, which also works on my cell phone. Now I use the Verizon USB720 air card, and with the included USB extension cable, all I usually have to do now is place the air card in the window for an acceptable signal. Can't speak for others, but in my own experience, being inside the Airstream (or any metal trailer, or vehicle) does affect the signal strength. But, in my case, it is easily resolved by getting the air card near a window, or with an external antenna.

When I travel, I connect to the Internet by tethering my Verizon Cell phone to my computer and using it as a modem. I use an USB cable, but a blue tooth connection will also work. The plus side to this is that you only need to activate the Mobile Band Broad feature; you do not need another plan. This means you can turn it on and off as often as you wish. The $49.95 charge is prorated for the time you have the feature activated. If you have a smart phone, the pricing is a little more complicated. In short, the total for Mobile Band Broad and whatever data feature is on your smart phone will be $59.95.
This group on yahoo is the place to go for info on this.

The aluminum skin on the airstream will definitely affect cell phone reception, as it will any radio reception. So if you use the USB cable method, be sure to have a cable long enough to allow placing the phone near a window. Which window you choose can also make a difference.
Regards,
Ken

My Dell was built with an internal verizon board. I don't know if it is grounding or what, but there is some antenna effect that makes my reception very good. With one bar (or less) signal strength on phones I've had -- I can hardly have a conversation. The verizon card has worked when I've had no bars on the cell. And one exceptional example when I know the direction to the cell tower was through the side of the trailer.

I don't necessarily seek a window position but then our dinette has about 180 degrees of windows around it ... though reception from cell towers is line of sight. So your results may vary until you find the right spot particular to your campsite.

Rouge Waves

This must be why I sleep better in the Airstream without all the negative waves from wifi/wireless/broadband/cell.

As soon as the honeybees discover this...we're in trouble.

IIRC voice requires a better signal strength than data, at least that has been my experience.

FWIW I have used both Sprint and Verizion with similar results where I had coverage. Currently the vendor is Verizon and I am satisfied with the results. I use one of 3 devices: PCMIA card, USB or a Blackberry either tethered or on blue tooth depending on the the laptop and who is paying for it.

We had a wireless data card for our computer, and found it worked best when tucked up under the streetside awning, with an extension cord attached. Otherwise, the connection would fizzle out at the most inopportune times.
