I had to chuckle when I read the "head south to SLC" advice. My brother just moved there and sent us a photo of him shoveling the walkway...

If the weather holds in the plains, I would take the Expressway going east of the Rockies and then 24 to Nashville, then Birmingham south to I 10 and then east to 75, south to the Florida Expressway at Ocala. It is pretty straight from there to Miami.

Make a reservation before you leave, to be sure you have a place to park. Most Florida campgrounds and RV parks are usually pretty full in mid winter. Sometimes it can be very difficult to find a place.

In Post No. 11 he indicates that reservations have been made.

Chains in winter travel south

Have a 2015 1500 sierra 4 wd V-8 crew cab and a 30' FC. Trk. pulls 9200 lbs. Also have a weight distribution hitch.
Plan is to get south asap so we can use AS. Heading south from Montana thru Salt Lake and then toward Phoenix. Eventual destination, Florida.
Have heard pros and cons on chains for
Truck.
Several of you have helped me a lot so far.

Good luck Tom, I happened to be looking at the new post list when you just posted.

One concern that you are likely aware of, but just occurred to me to be near the top of the list, is black ice. At this time of year, with the many Interstate bridges you will be crossing, black ice will be commonplace, and four-wheel drive, snow tires and chains do not really cover this risk well. A "measure twice, cut once" FYI.

Happy Trails,

Peter

Tom, if the roads are bad enough so you need chains on the truck, and you are pulling a trailer, you should not be on the road at all. That is just my opinion of course.

Stop and wait it out if it gets that bad.

Chains

IDROBA,

I agree, and will no doubt try to stay off any ice and snowy roads.
Having traveled full time with various rigs and in unusual weather conditions,
things can get severe very quickly. Even just to get off the road to stay put for awhile. E.g. Like last week, in and around Albuquerque made me think twice.

FYI: I just found out that Les Schwab Tire Centers will sell you chains and if you do not use them, they will take them back after April and credit you in full.
For my size tires, P275/55R20 a set was $99.95.

Thank you for the response.

Storm Chasers....

I wonder if I could hire some storm chasers to take the lead for our north/south trip?

Let you know if any unknowns come up.

Thanks for all the help and support.
