Williston ND - Still Camping "Chaos"?

Greetings All

Wondering if the camping (just over-night) availability around the Williston area has improved of recent date?

There seems to have been a "slow-down" in activity in the Bakken shale production area, but I can not tell if there is more "friendly" transient camping available.

Thoughts and campground recommendations are most welcome.

Bill

Sorry can't help specifically for that area, I live just South of Fargo. Even with the slow down out West, there is still a ton of people out there.

Where I work, we have a partner that sells our equipment (rebranded) out of Watford City just south of Williston, we have not slowed down on sending them new equipment or rebuild parts for existing equipment.

Somebody posted this site a week or so ago,
Freecampsites.net
This link shows a couple camp sites in the area, if you double click the mini map on the right you can change the focal point and look in different areas.
Map of Free Camping Areas | Go Camping for Free!

If you aren't set on staying that far North, you could travel south to the north part of Theodore National Park, should be friendly camping there.

Or if you go farther East, my wife's family is from Rugby ND (geographic center point of North America), in the few times that I've been up there in the last 20 years, it always seemed like a friendly (but boring) place.

Or if you really want to venture south and East of there, the Missouri Valley South of Bismarck has some nice areas with camping along the river.

Sorry I can't be more help, since moving to ND, we haven't done much camping. And I just brought home our first AS last weekend so I haven't needed to explore with it just yet.

Last summer we stopped in Dickinson to check-out the North Dakota Oil Boom. We spent several nights at the North Park Campground right in Dickinson, next to the Wal-Mart. It was mostly long term camper working in the oil fields. They keep a few sites for short term visitors.

It was a nice experience. We had a great time touring the area. We drove up to Williston one day to look around, but didn't try to get a campsite up there.

Thanks Ron and Brian for your comments.

We were really wanting to traverse Rt. 2 on a return trip from Glacier, but the Williston area may well have us turning South sooner than we wanted.

Darn! Sigh!

You will not really find any nice 'campy' campgrounds there that do not have long term campers there as well. If it were me I'd check out Lewis and Clark State Park (Lewis and Clark State Park) Which is about 20 miles from Williston and they do take reservations. If you get down towards Dickinson we love camping in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park at Cottonwood Campground. Enjoy your time in the state things are really green right now!

We stayed at Lewis and Clark a few years ago and liked it.

Thanks All

Well, altho there are some options, going to head South after Glacier and spend some time in the Badlands.

"Streamin' is always fun, no matter where.

It's going to be the SD Badlands this time. There are a few corners there we haven't gotten to.

Next year's trip to MT will include the ND Badlands, the park and area surrounding are magnificent.

Thanks again all!
