Wild Horses Meet Bambi...

Hey Gang.
Just got back from Assateague.
Great place to go, highly recommend it.
We camped in the "H" lot, where they have power.
Weather was great, about 50 yds to the beach and plenty to do around the area (Ocean City and Berlin).
Here are a few pics....

What a fantastic place to visit. Was there in 2000 and definitely want to return one day. It was such a moving experience to see humans and horses communing on the beach in complete harmony. In one instance, I was filming a line of horses coming over a dune. They turned toward me as I stood my ground and continued filming. The lead horse walked slowly at me and gently bumped into me as my camera rolled. Wow, I was astounded. I am not a horse person and had no intention of touching any of them. That is against the rules. This horse touched me first so I had to give him a good pat as he and the rest passed. For as long as I live that will be very high on my list of best memories.
Everyone should try to make it to Assateague Island at least once. You will be glad that you did.

Beautiful pictures, we will have to go. Are also wanting to go to Cumberland Island, where there are also wild horses, but no camping other than tents allowed.

Nice pics! How did the horses get there, swim, or what?

Mike,
They are actually miniature wild ponies and once a year they swim the ponies from Assateague Island to Chicoteague Island where some of the foals and yearlings are auctioned off at the Chicoteague Volunteer Fire Company Carnival. The pony swim, auction and carnival is July 29, 2009.

You can read all about it here...
