Why I bought an Airstream

Dateline: March 27th 2019, 7:15AM

We had towed the (light) AS for 4 miles on the North Padre Island (TX) beach with my 4x4 TV.

Spent 7 mostly sunny days boondocking (or in this case glamping) in nature, with at least 6 species of birds surrounding us, including pelicans who would fly every morning in perfect fighter pilot formation along the beach at 25-30 feet above ground; for some reason they would always stop beating their wings and glide as they passed over our shining AS (you almost felt the urge to salute!).

Had to hitch up and leave on the 7th day since a storm the night before (we were perfectly comfy in our "earth capsule") was pushing the tide waves a little too close for comfort.

This was our first long (65 days, 8000 miles) trip (newly retired) and we are super happy with our rig. Happy and safe travels and have a great summer!

That looks awesome!

My aunt and uncle used to go spend the winters on the gulf coast, I think near Corpus Christi Texas. They would tell of catching flounder. Hope to get there some day too.

Great to know you can tow an Airstream down the beach. I confess, I haven't searched the forums for other posts about towing an Airstream through the sand.

It looks like you had a great spot. Any tips on towing on a beach? Did you "air down"? Were you able to tow through soft sand? What is your TV? Is that a Suburban or an Expedition?

Thanks

Thanks!

Having a 4x4 3/4 ton TV with all terrain tires helps. I didn't need to deflate.

It depends on the granularity of the sand and how damp it is. We had previously stayed a night on Holly Beach (by Cameron, LA) and there the sand was dryer and deeper (saw a 2X4 pickup get stuck to the axel and a 1 ton 2x4 dually struggle). So we stayed in a safer zone (it is a good idea to first take a walk on the surface you plan to drive on).

The first 5 miles of Padre Island which is 70 miles long, has a hard packed strip of very fine sand in the tidal zone. But beyond the 5 mile milepost, only 4x4 vehicles can make it (and I wouldn't haul a 28' AS there).

If you take your Airstream to the beach, be sure and wash it off afterwards with a low powered pressure washer, all over including the belly. Otherwise, later on filiform corrosion will form on the rivet holes and skin edges and work its way inward on the panels. Always keep it polished especially on the vulnerable points mentioned.

I totally agree. I carry in my truck my electric Karcher pressure washer, as small 12V water pump, my Honda 2200 generator (with propane adaptor) and 2 (empty) 5Gal water jugs; I was able to pressure rinse the AS and the TV while boondocking on the beach and once more when we were inland.
