WHO wears the HAT while on the road?
The Hat... not pants, skirt, dress, snickers, peddle pushers... HAT.
I have a good selection of hats that are selected for style, location and purpose.
I cannot leave town without three or four ball caps.
A black beaver Stetson with years of dust and pollen to put some proper age onto it.
When necessary, I will wear my clean western hat and pull up boots with the heel that points your forward. A Western Sh*t Kicker boot when at a livestock show or Rodeo but only for special occasions. Like shooting Craps in Las Vegas.
If you are from New York City... own some hat that might be more Down State... like Indiana or Arkansas. We call these hats... camouflage. When in Idaho... a potato stitched into your hat is appropriate, there.
My "Bite Me" hat from Aruba with an Iguana, mouth if teeth wide open, Rose Pink is my favorite, it is showing some wear on the edge of the brim. I stapled it and that should give me a few more decades of good use.
Flea Markets are great for... hat selection when undercover on a trip across the USA or sneaking into Canada... Hockey is a great disguise for a hat. Or a Drilling Rig when in Calgary... maybe a Calgary Stampede hat AND scarf.
When we are in Wyoming I still have my University of Wyoming hats and sweaters. Nobody wants to hear that you are from anyway near Denver... not in Wyoming. They still remember someone breaking into their pickup truck stealing the rifle that was in the rear window rack.
A niece plays high level competitive... tennis. She gave me a hat with some Tennis Championship stitched into the front. The hat fits nice and secure. I would not know a Love-Love from a tennis ball that is lacking internal air pressure. A neighbor started a conversation with me about he loved watching professional tennis on television. Hmmm. Delicate conversation for me playing tennis in gym class for a couple weeks in 1964.
Who is going to wear a handout "political hat", no matter which side of the fence you are standing. Not me, for sure. Leave those in New York City. Some political hats in the West are for roping and hanging on a wall.
I even carry my Airstream 2006 hat. If you did not think the other campers at the RV Park already are envious or your Airstream... do not wear the hat and jacket. The shock that you do not have a maid and butler could be too much for them.
I would add a picture of myself wearing a hat. No, not the one with the buffalo horns attached... but I considered a Viking Hat once, but could not find one.
I might carry five to seven hats on a trip. You sometimes have to play it safe...

I have several ball caps that I wear as my hat of choice, also a Tilley that I came by via somewhat less than honest means and a straw wide brimmed hat that I picked up while on a Caribbean cruise. I will have all these in the trailer. Probably will only wear the ball caps...

There's only one hat brand in my house and they are well worth the price. I'm a Tilley man who has winter and summer weight versions.
Not to be confused with ball caps of which I have plenty.

Didn't put his name in it on the tag? That's the first thing I did at $80 for the hat! But yes, pretty much worth it.
I also have WAY too many ball caps. Many are New England Patriots hats and many others are from Duluth Trading - wherever possible, in a washable fabric (instead of cotton and cardboard).
When you're follicularly challenged, as I am, the hat is crucial to protect against sunburn on your unprotected dome!

Hat. Indeed. Being really old, and really bald, I need a hat to keep the sun off. Enough of the skin cancer already.
As I tossed it off when walking into the shop after working in the yard a while ago. Hat. Boonie. Faded camo, sweat and dirt. And an American flag. Enough said.
My "other" hat is an ancient dorfman aussie style bush hat, with liberal apps of scotchgard for use on rainy days.

No name, some nice pins though. It is a size too big so I am working on swelling my head a bit. Hard to do when the hair keeps falling out!

Hats and Caps... each have a purpose
Tilley... obviously I have been in the woods too long. They must be the floppy hat used to filter water for drinking and worn to dry out.
Looked up Tilley Hats on the internet. Would make me look Australian or Tasmanian lost in New Mexico, but this western accent would give me away as an imposter.
I did keep my helmet and liner from the 1969 clothing outfitters in the US Army. The camouflage cover, band to hold it on and slices in the fabric to insert weeds, grass and other plants to fit into the background. Some inked peace symbols and a FTA... Fun Travel Adventure abbreviations, for those who do not know better. I used the helmet to hold water while I shaved the five or six hairs on my face at the time. Now it sits on top of a wooden Indian in my home office.
My Dad brought back a German helmet from WW2. It fit when I was a kid and could double as a baseball helmet during practice with a new hardball pitcher. My head grew out of it. Still have it.
Neither of these I carry along on our trips. I can afford a plastic bowl to use for shaving, but shaving would be a daily event now, and nobody cares if I get a haircut or shave anyways. The hat covers up a bad haircut, no hair to cut, or if you are in between either.
I love my hats. I had a nice bamboo (?) woven hats that fit well from my brother in law. It blew off in Wyoming metal detecting and ended up in the one bush for miles. It put a hole the size of an orange into it. I still wear it as it ventilates and people take some pity on me looking for loose change at old campsites and think I am lost.
If I ever find a Tilley, I would sell it. A bit fancy for me to wear. Again, I do not have a butler to pick out my clothing. My wife washes my ball caps hoping over time the staples rust out and the fabric is too thin to do much good. Trust me... I know how to play that game.
Women have better taste in hat quality and design. I would have to be dead to wear any, but they look good on them.
It there is just a thread left and brim... it is going on this next camping trip.
Do you know how to determine a gold miner from a politician (Mark Twain- sorta)?
The politician is the liar standing next to a hole in the ground.

Doug favored baseball caps, his favorite being a khaki colored one with the Gunsite logo on it.
He wore it the day he was stricken, and it still hangs in the Interstate.
I had to wrestle his favorite few away from him to wash them occasionally.
He bought a wool tweed hat on one of our trips to Ireland, and liked to wear it on cold winter days when it was spitting a bit of snow but we were out tromping around....such as in Chicago around Christmas.
Doug hated drops of moisture on his glasses.
He liked hats, just because they were hats.

WHO wears the HAT while on the road?
I must confess to owning a lightweight Tilley.
In my defense, it was on sale, keeps rain off my glasses, my head, and the back of my neck, and has taken a fair amount of abuse. Also, my parents were hardcore Tilley canvas hat-wearers - you know, the kind that can be chewed up, digested, and pooped out by an elephant. Good as new afterward. Just give it a good shake, put it back on your head and get on about your business now that you can stop following that dang hat-eating elephant around, waiting for it to return your lid. So, maybe the Tilley thing is somehow genetic.

Oh boy, where to start.... Two Tillys, one replaced for free by Tilly for the old mostly worn out one, two Borsalino Fedoras-one beaver felt one Panama, an Akubra fur felt Aussie outback style, an old beat up Stetson gun club, an Orvis straw for fishing and golf, an Outback waxed cotton rain hat, multiple ball caps for various occasions, and a felt Resistol cowboy hat. Oh and a full blown plains feathered headdress. I wear a hat every day since the first MOHs procedure. Once was enough for that.
I really like Sean's pith helmet (LoLoHo). Gotta get one of those for the Safari!

I have a 25 year old cotton duck Eddie Bauer safari hat that has been worn, sweated in, and perfectly crown creased when I pinch it between my thumb and forefinger ti adjust it. It looks like a civil war era slouch hat!

I am a redneck, but I don't need to advertise the fact with a sunburned neck.
I wear a hat with a generous brim full circle ( some call it a cowboy hat). I generally wear them until they are shredded. To be able to keep them that long I attach a cork to the back of the hat band to provide some flotation. Seems all the hats I like are "sinkers". Which means when they blow off I have to turn the boat around quickly to retrieve them before they are too deep to recover. The cork gives me the time needed and makes them easier to find.

For me it's straw hats with pins and name tags from rallies and a pair of Ray Ban Aviators-
The hats live in the trailer.

"When in Idaho... a potato stitched into your hat is appropriate, there."
You hurt me there, Ray. How about keeping the folks from looking dated and updating my fine state's reputation by them getting a ball cap with a canoe, kayak, mountains, fish of all sorts, elk, mule deer, Idaho RMEF emblem etc. instead. jon

I have a small selection of "working" baseball hats - each has its own purpose: there's the workin'-in-the-yard hat, the workshop hat, the outdoor recreation hat, the trip-to-the-city hat, the goin'-out-for-supper hat and the Sunday-goin-to-meetin' hat.
You'll see that they are listed in a bit of an order - perhaps better defined by the severity and width of the sweat stain .....
A new hat gets added to the collection annually when on vacation - and it takes me a long time to make a choice.
Once a new hat gets added it takes the prime spot then the rest get bumped down a notch to the next lowest level - with the lowest level hat being retired to the smelly-hat-box in the basement.
Drives my wife nuts .....
