* Oliver Lee State Park -- Some sites have water, electric and/or sewer. Fees vary ($10-20/night) according to hookup(s) at each site. Note: Dump station is permanently closed.

* Alamogordo/White Sands KOA -- Typical KOA, $25-35/night.

* White Sands RV Communities -- Overnight/short-term parking with full hookups, $30/night (Good Sam = $27). Small sites, but clean and safe. Near downtown; close to restaurants & shopping, including Walmart.

Thanks Phoenix! We're headed out that way too in early March and I just snagged one of the last 2 electric sites at Oliver Lee. Pictures of it are beautiful!

When did they close dump station at Oliver Lee? We were there in March and it was open then.

Haven't been there in a few years. I think that was on the State Park Website at some time in the past, and I have it in my personal notes.

I assumed that "permanently closed" would still be in effect. Great thing, if it's open.

Thanks for the update.

I would not camp in Alamogordo, except for convenience. Basicly you will be in a parking lot.

Oliver Lee is much prettier.

I will add Three Rivers Petroglyph Site north of Alamogordo and Tularosa. It's a little further from White Sands but very very interesting

Not close enough for a White Sands base but definitely cool is the Valley of Fires Recreation Area near Carizozo. Nicely maintained campground and paved walks through a lava flow.

Would make a good overnight stopover on the way to or from White Sands.

Another place worth a gawk is the Organ Mountains on US 70 east of Las Cruces. This is our newest National Monument.

Valley of Fires BLM Campground - Carrizozo, NM (about 50 miles north of Alamogordo)

Well-maintained campground with paved roads and sites, covered ramadas, BBQ grills; remodeled in recent years. 14 of 19 sites have water and electric hookups. Clean, modern restrooms have flush toilets and great showers; dump station.

State park on BLM land, honors National Park Senior Pass discount of half-off camping fees.

We stayed at Oliver Lee last month the night before our visit to White Sands. The dump station was open when we were there.

I would stay there again. It's beautiful!

It's a pretty place!
The shower was kind of brisk (no hot water) but no complaints otherwise.
