Where to stay in Santa Fe

Thinking of making a run to Santa Fe and I've never been. Anyone familiar with the parks there? Which one is best? Any input appreciated.

Thanks,

BW

Only one I'm familiar with is the KOA and it ain't anything special but it is OK and I would go back - if I ever go back to Santa Fe that is.

If you are looking for inexpensive try Black Canyon in the state forest just outside Santa Fe. No electric but does have water. Beautiful spot and only $10.00 a night. There is also a state park just next door which has electric.

We just stayed at Lake Abiquiu. AWESOME. Not much shade but the site had electric & water. It's an hour to the Town Square in Santa Fe and an hour to Taos. Beautiful views from campground and close to the Ghost Ranch and the landscapes that inspired Georgia O'Keefe

Go up to the campgrounds above the city on Hyde Park road. About 10 miles but up in the pines.

Santa Fe Skies is good. Reasonably close to town and great wifi!

As previously stated, Black Canyon is the nicest but without hookups. Santa Fe Skies is the most convenient to town with full hookups. Rancheros de Santa Fe east of town on the old Las Vegas Hghy (next to KOA) with hookups is also good. If you stay out that way, try Harry's Road House for meals. And Maria's for margaritas.

Near Black Canyon is Hyde Park Memorial. Both are up in the Sangre de Cristos at about 9000 feet. In the fall the area is gorgeous, but packed with the leaf peeper crowd. They are in national forest I also really like the national forest north of Pecos east of Santa Fe.

We've stayed at Santa Fe Skies and know Trailer Ranch pretty well. SF Skies is ok, but we'll choose TR the next time we're in town. TR is closer to the plaza and shopping, and they've got some shade trees.

TR is, however, for adults. And they close the gates before dark, so no late arrivals.

Both are pretty popular, so reservations are probably a good idea.

If you like a C.O.E. campground, you may want to check out Cochiti Lake located south of Santa Fe.

Thanks for the replies. I've been looking at the websites and reviews on Skies and TR. Seems like they pack em in pretty tight, but I guess that's what you give up to get a full hook-up. Are they as rack and stack as they look?

We will be at TR starting the 18th. Stayed there last year. It's on the bus line. We never had to use the truck the whole week we stayed there -- including the day we went to Albuquerque on the commuter train.

I think both are fairly tight, though that's not surprising, given the price of even tiny patches of real estate in Santa Fe! But you don't go to Santa Fe in order to stay in a park. Go enjoy the City Different!

It appears I may not be old enough to stay at Trailer Ranch. Imagine that. AARP wants me but I'm still not old enough to stay at the ranch. Looks like I'll be at Skies or the KOA.

Update ---

We ended up staying at the KOA on Old Las Vegas road. It was adequate and I would probably stay there again. If you're thinking of staying there....

The Good-

Clean bathrooms and hot showers
Easy 12 mile drive into Santa Fe with little traffic
Close to good food and Margaritas at Harry's Roadhouse

The Bad-

Narrow Spaces
Cable at my space was bad and never got fixed
30 amp was questionable. My meter barely touched the green

We never ran the AC or sat around watching TV so the bad stuff didn't really matter to us, but still, you're still paying for a service.

Didn't make Black Canyon or Hyde this time, but we did drive up to White Rock and Bandelier. Wow. May try to stay a couple of nights at Bandelier next year when they finish the campground rehab.

I really envy you folks that get to roam around out there. It's beautiful country for sure.
