Where to leave your Airstream when you have to fly?
Hey all, my wife and I are planning an extended trip, and have a question that we hope the forum could help us answer. For background, we plan to take a long trip, and during the trip, we want to fly home for a family reunion. We are wondering though where can we park our rig for the 4-5 days we are home? Do airports accommodate? Or, should we leave the trailer at a campground (and notify the hosts), and park just the tow vehicle at the airport? Or is there an even better option we have not thought of? Thanks all in advance for your thoughts!!

I would think a campground, leaving your trailer hooked up to electricity, parking your tow vehicle at the airport or getting a shuttle or Uber if available to avoid those parking charges.

I've seen some airports Long Term parking that have RV parked in them.

We've had thoughts around this subject for a few years. We typically leave home around Mid-June and travel for five to six months. Whether it be planned or an emergency, we wonder what we would do if we had to leave temporarily along our route. Planned is a no brainer - we would leave it (with reservations) with at least electric hook-up to keep the refrigerator running.
If it's an emergency, the park you have reserved when you leave, probbly isn't the park you have reserved several days to a week later. My thoughts are to find a park/resort close to your airport departure location, that offers electric, and where you can leave your trailer for as long as necessary. We're not wanting to throw out the contents of the fridge to park in some space without electric.
The TV parking will be what it will be. Uber is a good idea if it's available. We typically carry a bug-out bag (suitcase) usually packed for emergencies, but which can substitute for travel purposes when necessary.
I think we have a decent plan. 'Course it all depends on the execution.

I would leave it at a camp ground close. Tell the camp ground your plans and they will more than likely accommodate you with a discounted rate. But $30 a nite for 5 days would not be a bad deal to know your RV is safe and ready to go when you get back.

We were on sn extended trip eatlier this year, mostly State Parks and BLM Boondocking. Due to a death in the family, we needed to find a place for our AS and TOW vehicle. We found an 2 RV parks about 20 miles from an Airport. We called and both were very acomodating. Full hookups, security, and Uber service to/from the airport. For us, the secutity, gated RV park and other RV’rs arround gave us peace of mind that was great.

Hi
If you call around, you *should* be able to find campgrounds with "storage" locations. The benefit is that they are a bit less expensive than a full blown site.

We did this kind of thing on a regular basis when we still had our truck camper. We would separate from the Airstream and take the truck camper into the back country for several days at a time. We always left the Airstream hooked up in a campground while we were away. This way we could leave everything hooked up, and there is a certain amount of security with other campers around in the campground. It may have cost more than some type of storage, but it was well worth the extra money.

I used to do that a lot working out of town. I'd leave the trailer hooked up at a camp ground, park truck in extended economy lot, and fly home.

We have solar and when we need to fly somewhere, we just leave the Airstream unplugged at a local campground that has a storage lot at a much reduced rate. For extended trips, e.g. three months, we've also left our Airstream at an Airstream only campground which can be very economical for WCCBI members.

We recently dealt with this particular problem. We are full timers, and needed to fly out to a family function in California in Mid May. We knew we would be traveling up the East Coast. Southwestern Airlines flies out of Baltimore, Maryland. I found trailer storage in Baltimore (about 10 minutes from the airport) at BWI Indoor Boat and RV Storage. Their fees are reasonable, and they stored the trailer indoors, hooked up to electricity. They also stored the truck. I then found a campground for the night before the flight, and booked us in for the night we returned also. The campground was about 20 minutes from the storage. The BWI guys drove us to the airport, and picked us up. LOGISTICS! Fancy stuff, right? NO....its just what we do every day! I just had to make sure that I had enough time for the connections: campground to storage to airport without rushing, which I loathe...... And then had to make sure the return flight left us enough time to pick up the trailer prior to the storage closing (before it was too dark to drive!) It came off without a hitch. Good luck, and happy trails, safe travels.

We've done the campground, Uber / taxi thing a few times. Like others have said, the AS is connected to electric and there's decent security. We generally leave the truck with the AS because it's been cheaper to Uber or taxi than pay for long term airport parking. We've done trips averaging 10 days at a time. Good luck.
