Where have all the Airstreams Gone?

Long time passing! Our Summer 2011 trip resulted in 7,450 miles through 16 states, over 48 days and 47 nights. We had a little water system trouble in Spearfish, SD, but nothing that a great American, a roving RV repairman named "Jim," couldn't fix. God bless him. Our old girl, an '86, 32-foot Sovereign, otherwise performed admirably. God bless her! As always, we enjoyed counting other Airstreams during our journey. We only count those on the road, or temporarily parked at the State parks and private campgrounds where we stay. It has to appear that the owners are on the road. We don't count anything permanently parked or semi-abandoned. We saw only 22 travelling Airstreams, a pitiful few compared to the thousands upon thousands of other RV's on the road. While it makes us feel somewhat unique, I'm wondering where you all are hiding!

Joe,
Our Spring trip was 18 states and 1 province, from VA to the the West Coast. Like you, we counted working/running AS units. Our count stands at 98 in 23 days for travel. We're out there, and we're camping, and it's neat!

We usually see about 8-10 during a 10 day trip. I agree, not a lot, but when you see them and they flash their headlights to say Hi it reminds you what a friendly bunch we are.

Seven total on our cross-country last October. Four out, three back.

Sometimes there are few, sometimes a lot. There are more in certain states like Cal. and the south I think, and generally that's where there are more RV's. Last summer we saw about 30 or 40 in a caravan on the Alaska Hwy. There will be 100 at the Balloon Fiesta in a month. There are at least 8 in little Delta Co., Colo., though of the 4 in Paonia, Colo., I think only one ever moves and that's not often—I think all are owned by one person.

I've lost count of the number of airstreams we've seen since June. Apparently a lot of them are cruising the western states this year.

This spring we drove from Idaho to Washington, DC via the northern tier (to stay away from the tornadoes!) and then headed down Hwy 95 to Hwy 10 and across the southern tier to New Mexico and then north through Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana and back to Idaho. About 9,000 miles, 24 states 12 national parks/monuments and one wedding (our son). AC didn't work and eventually we replaced the unit in New Mexico when the temperature hit 108 degrees in June. No other major maintenance issues.

We saw a few Airstream trailers on the road or camping but not as many as we would have thought. We didn't write it down, but I would guess 10-12. We camped at an RV park in Deer Lodge, Montana the evening before returning home and the campground manager placed us in a site right next to the only other AS in the campground; a beautiful Classic from Texas. I'm not sure if that was to keep AS-types together so they could keep an eye on us or what...

They're common here in CA. Another 25 is just a few spots down in the storage lot, and I later found out the owner is a member here on the forum. I know of two others in the lot. Saw several Airstreams on highway 395 in July. There's another 25/Tundra combo in my neighborhood, exactly the same color truck but a crew cab instead of my double cab.

We don't see many as we travel but that makes them the more precious. If someone ever pulls one they will be hard pressed to buy anything else. Why settle for anything less?

Two trips from South Florida to North Carolina this summer netted me one sighting. I am always on the lookout because it eliminates the bordom of Interstate driving.

Saw a total of 4 on a 190 mile trip down US 13 thru De. and Md. on Sunday, Aug. 21. All heading north. But lost count of the SOBs. Sal.

Fairly common here in Maine. I see one or two Airstreams almost every time I travel I-95 - North or South. Even more common as you approach roads leading to Acadia National Park. All of New England and the Maritimes is great country for Airstreams!

We are on a short weekend trip in New Mexico - from Santa Fe to Las Cruces and back. On the way down we saw 4 on the road. All looked pretty new.

We saw a 1989 Limited 34 at Jumbo Campground on Grand Mesa, Colo. yesterday. It has the original clearcoat with none pealing off.

When last at Santa Fe, at Trailer Ranch last month, there were 3 other Airstream trailers, one Interstate, and an Avion. The guy with the Interstate was looking for a place in the southwest where his allergies wouldn't be as bad as in Ga. I suggested he try Antarctica.
