With no Airstream currently and the camping season approaching soon, we are scouring the net to find other travel options for the next year. We have specifics that we want with our next Airstream, and need something functional and safe for this season.

I have been looking at ads for Shastas, Teardrops, t@b trailers, and many other vintage units. Besides functionality, we want a trailer that will not require any work, and we don't want anything that looks like junk.

What if any are you folks using as backup trailers when not in your Airstream (Argosy's and other Streams don't count!)?

Alas, there is no LIFE beyond our beloved Airstream...Let them eat cake!

I suppose there's always the 'T' word, if you can stand lying on the ground with some nylon or canvas sheets over you...

and that option was taken off the table before we bought our first Airstream in 2006. We will not go back to "Tent" camping ever again.

We just sold our vintage 1965 Shasta airflytte! it was great, and we had a lot of fun traveling with it. I have always wanted an Airstream, and after 8 years with my Shasta, I got an Airstream! The Shasta sold quick, though. We had redone it and kept it in good condition, though! So after an airstream, I'd pick a Shasta!!! Get one with the wings still on! Maggie

Steve, I am a huge fan of FAN. Well built, basic campers. A more solid, but simpler Shasta. I also very much like Yellowstones, Kenskill, and Shasta. All three are well built canned hams. Serro Scottys have a huge following. The clubs(yes, two clubs) have a great following and all their events are a lot of fun. Scotty people are like Airstreamers, just a few $ signs removed. Scotty trailers are not very well built. They do retain their value though.

We owned a T@B right before we bought the Argosy. Got to say, it was a good little camper. Expensive for what you get, but what you get is a nearly new camper that everyone looks at and is easy to tow and park. It wasn't perfect - the integrated window shades are fragile and I had to replace a water pump - but otherwise it was pretty solid. They also have an eager and friendly fan base through a Yahoo group.

If you could find a used Casita, I'd be tempted by that.

Hi Lo. It was our first camper before a line of motor homes and travel trailers ultimately leading to the Airstream.
Hi Los tow well, if anything even better than Airstreams, are steel framed and reasonably durable. Look around and you will see lots of old ones, mostly small, priced reasonably.

If you have an Airstrem, you do not need a backup. "Boatdoc"

That's quite a list of requirements Steve, sounds like pretty much the only thing that can meet them all is an Airstream.

my back up is a 32.5 montana mountainere with two slides when we need extra room for two week+ stays.

When we bought the AS, we sold our Coleman PU to my daughter. If I don't have the AS ready for this summer it wll be either the tent with queen sized air bed, or maybe we'll "borrow" the pop up from my daughter...or maybe we'll rent one of the cabins at the campgound.

We have a Holiday Rambler 22' - redone - complete with pup condos (of course). It's as square as it gets - tandem so it's balanced and pulls ok.

Hey Botdoc...no current Airstream at all.

I have scoured Tin Can Classifieds, Ebay, Craigslist, and the private boards. I believe I was in talks with Maggie about her 65 before it sold. There is a FAN on TCT, but the interior was painted stark white, and the setup is not great at all.

I'm wanting to spend around $8,000 tops, and while there are trailers out there, they need alot of work.

Have looked at the T@B trailers, but they really won't fit all 3 of us. I have found a teardrop with a bunk and a pop out on one side that looks really cool though.

Ditto what Marcus said in post #9 above.
Money invested in an intermediate "unit" will only disappear when it's time for you & Amy to rejoin your AS family. Keep shopping for AS's!! And good luck.

I'd go with a Montana, Holiday Rambler, or Sunnybrook less than five years old, either travel trailer or 5th wheel.

I do think the old Scotty's are cool, but they would be too small for us. I'm also squeamish about buying any old RV with wood framed walls.
