What's your all-time favorite campsite?

We are always searching for the most awesome campsite.

We just returned from our current favorite. It is at Navarre Beach Campground in Florida. As you can see in the picture, you step directly off your apron onto their private beach complete with lounge chairs, cabanas, and a fishing pier. It is located on the north shore of the sound which is about 1 mile north of the actual gulf coast. Its awesome. The campground is well managed and very well maintained. Click on the photo for a better view.

I think our favorite is at Navajo National Monument on the reservation in northeast Arizona. I don't have any pictures of the campsites themselves, but here's a pic of a slickrock area just a couple hundred yards behind the campground:

And here's one down near the Betatakin Ruins overlook, just a quarter mile or so from the visitor's center:

We lived in Arizona for a few years and saw some of the most spectacular sites there.

The next campsite!

In the year and a half that I've owned my Airstream, I haven't camped in the same place twice. Haven't seen any reason to. There are too many places I haven't seen yet.

We have traveled far and wide and I don't really have a favorite, but...
It is pretty hard to beat the North Abutment campground at Grenada Lake.

Speaking of Florida...

Fort Wilderness is awesome.
I hope Topsail Hill Preserve is wonderful. We are headed to Canopener in January.

Just spent 4 days at Oh Ridge CG. Now our favorite campsite. June lake area has so much to offer. So close to Yosemite, Mono Lake, and Mammoth Lakes.

Orr's Island Campsite, Maine

We'll be camping on The Battenkill next week; however, camping on Orr's Island Campground in Maine is quickly gaining on one of our all time favorites. We'll have a better feel for it by week's end but for now it's site #43A overlooking the bay with a clear view of the SW sky for a good DTV signal.

Probably my all-time favorite wasn't Airstream related: 1971 0n the shores of the Arctic near Point Barrow, AK; or more recently, any one like this one along the Selway River, ID.

Too many to count! Deadhorse Point State Park near Moab, UT ranks high, but we would probably vote for the municipal CG in New Denver, BC. Right on Slocan Lake overlooking the Valhalla Range, and the town is a former WWII Japanese internment camp with an open air museum and memory gardens. The drive up to Idaho Peaks in August for the view and wildflowers is well worth it for a high-clearance vehicle (narrow road!) For the more adventuresome head north up the lake to camp at Wragge Beach-- the road is rough, to be taken slowly. The lake is great for kayaking/canoeing, and there is a swimming beach.

What size trailers do you think one could get up the road into Wragge's and into the camp spaces? I loved the research I was able to do about the location, but parks BC suggests it's tents only; that or they simply dont have the information desired about the park!

We've been to Orr's Island several times over the last 3 years and still talk about it as one of our favorites. Hope you're getting your fill of lobster and clams. There's a woman named Janet on site 6 or 8 that wrote a book about growing up on Bailey Island. If you should meet her, please pass along a hello from the Masons. For a spectacular beach, take a ride to Popham Beach State Park in Phippsburg. Parking was $12 a few years ago but worth it.

Do you take a ferry to Orr's island or can you drive there directly?

You drive there. Orr's Island is the middle of a three-island chain running south out of Brunswick on Route 24 and easily accessible from I-95. Route 24 dead ends at what's called Land's End, which is a beautiful rocky coast overlook. But don't take your trailer there as there's only a small parking area and turning around might not be an option.

I just returned from Cobscook Bay State Park in Maine. My site was on a small bluff overlooking the bay. When the tides went out we gathered clams on our own beach. The site was private and wide. Everyday in early August it would rain for an hour followed by magnificent rainbows. At night we watched the shooting stars and satellites stream across the sky above our fire pit overlooking the water. The Milky Way was spectacular. There are no crowds based on the location and the spacing. It is paradise of you like Maine.

You could fit a Bambi into several of the sites, but I wouldn't try longer than that. Plan B would be to leave a bigger AS at the CG in New Denver, and head up to Wragge Beach for the day with your vehicle and a picnic-- and hopefully a kayak or two. There is an even sketchier municipal CG at Silverton, and a nice municipal CG in Slocan at the foot of the lake but it is not on the water-- the others are. There is a provincial park CG at Rosebery but it is not on the water, either, and there doesn't seem to much to the park besides camping.

BTW, another advantage of this area would be day trips to the Nakusp or Ainsworth hot springs, and hiking/cycling on the Galena Trail.
