Hi all: I am in!! So it was this great thread which finally convinced Sherry and I to get an iPhone for each of us. Just downloaded Starbucks, and made a list of the other apps generously provided by each of you. We are soooooooooo close to just traveling a month at a time, so this preliminary research is great. My faves are:

- FourTrack: I nice little 4 track recording app that lets you turn your AS into a recording studio. Great for those lazy afternoons when you just want to lay down a few guitar licks

- BigOven: Don't know what to make for dinner? Always has great ideas

- AroundMe: Great for finding gas stations, banks ...everything when you're in an unfamiliar town or city.

- Skype: Great for making free long distance phone calls when boondocking.

- iBird Canada: Great for figuring out what that little-brown-jobbie was that woke you up chirping at 5am

Great thread, thanks all. The Starbucks app is critical to civilized travel - love it.

Unrelated to travel, if any of you use AT&T and have low/no/limited in-house coverage, they have a new product called MicroCell, which essentially gives you a cell phone tower in your home - provides 5 bar coverage. It has a GPS component which supports E911 capabilities (knows you are where you are).

Unlocked and jailbroken

I recently stepped over to the darkside.
It really upset me when I realized how much Apple and At&T are restricting IPHONE users from. The IPHONE is super pwerful, but it is merely a PDA when it is bricked to the Apple and AT&T.

It is staggering how many apps, (free apps at that) are available to unlocked phones. My Iphone is a true computer now and can dance now that I have severed to leash.

Goodbye Apple and At&T

Smily...if your I-Phone is unlocked...what service are you using. I've had Verizon for many years but have AT&T because I wanted an I-Phone. Love the phone...hate the coverage. Am I correct that if the phone is unlocked you can use any carrier? Thanks!

Bob

I use Motion X GPS for skiing and on my bicycle sometimes. Just got Motion X Drive and is seems like a gem. Also the Kindle app is a gem. I always have three or four books in my pocket.

Some of my favorite apps are:

NPR News
Bonsai Blast (Glu Mobile)
AAA Discounts ~ great way to find discounts from your current location on everything from hotel rooms to parts at Napa.

Any carrier

I have AT &T but will be leaving them when contract ends in a few months.

But you can use Iphone ANYWHERE in the world if it is unlocked and on any carrier.

IPHONEs sold anywhere but the U.S. are sold unlocked. Those phones were available to all other markets before Apple and AT&T even came close to selling them in the US. Pure "communism" practiced by those two companies.

Imagine tethering your phone, somthing that the two companies dont allow. When you unlock, you too can have a phone that performs like ALL other PDAs.

How about AT&T and their empty promises? It takes a lawsuit foro them to even react. And when they do open tethering, they intend to charge you more money.....for something you already pay for.
