Got your attention didn't I (lol) I am watching 'Whats eating Gilbert Grape' this A.M. and clipped this caravan of Airstreams in the beginning of the show.
Does anyone know the story about that and how it might have been staged? here's a picture.

I guess it has to do with the general setting of the film. Here's the beginning of the plot summary from Wikipedia; highlight is mine:
Quote:
In a small town of Endora, Iowa, Gilbert James Grape (Johnny Depp) is busy caring for his mentally disabled brother Arnie (Leonardo DiCaprio), who is autistic, as they wait for the many tourists' trailers to pass through town during their yearly camp ritual at a nearby recreational area. His mother, Bonnie (Darlene Cates) is morbidly obese after years of depression following her husband's suicide. With Bonnie unable to care for them by herself, Gilbert has taken responsibility for repairing their shanty of a farmhouse while looking after Arnie, who has a habit of climbing up the town water tower if left unsupervised for too long, all while his older sister Amy (Laura Harrington) and younger sister Ellen (Mary Kate Schellhardt) slave away in the kitchen.
Thats right, it is a bevy of tourists...but wondered if any one knew the story as to how that all was pulled together. Or did the Director just hire actors to pull rented airstreams past for that scene, or possibly were there some 'streamers on this forum that participated?
I realize this is an old thread, but I just saw "Gilbert Grape" last night and noticed that the movie was filmed in Texas, and there is a note at the end of the credits thanking the Texas Airstream Club. So I would guess that the movie makers contacted the TX AS Club and got them to stage a caravan for the movie.
When I first saw this movie, I recognized the road immediately: driving down Hwy 20 from my home in Seguin Texas to Lockhart Texas!
This is a very scenic road and a beautiful drive. However, a rather rough pavement.
I suspect Region 9 had some participation.
