Oops! Forgot the area around Stanley, ID-fabulous. We have reservations at Lake Stanley for September-so looking forward to it again! Sawtooth mountains, the Salmon River, and Jimbo's Jumbos!

I like Rt. 6 and 59 in Pennsylvania, during fall leaf season.

Our favorite is Highway 89A traveling south from Highway 17 (Near I-40) towards Sedona, Arizona. A close second for us is Highway 1 along the California coast between San Luis Obispo and Monterey.

One Fourth of July a while back I left out of Crater of Diamonds State Park before dawn trying not be late for dinner in Kansas City. I traveled Arkansas Scenic "7" up from Hot Springs and in the early morning on the holiday had the road to myself - just repaved & mostly un-painted it was about as good as it gets for this driver & was just a polite 15 minutes late for dinner. (I reminded myself if I went off the road I wouldn't be found for a week)

For pure scenery driving, out of Vancouver in an easterly fashion then meeting up with Canada's Highway 1 was magic untill reaching their badlands and praries that just seem to go on forever.

Million Dollar Highway out of Ouray, Colorado - went a few minutes southbound out of town on it and had to come to complete stop on first 'no guardrail" corner w/ hundred foot drop off... took a few breaths and made it to Durango in time to set camp and still get a steak dinner.

Thanks for the tip on Bear Tooth Scenic Byway!!

One of the most memorable scenic drives ever is up thru Glenwood canyon
traveling on I-70 thru colorado .The granite and pine trees the rushing river
next to the interstate ,across the river you can see the trains along the base
of the mountains .I imagine way back when the steam locomotives roared
along the tracks double headed for the grades ,going thru the tunnels.
the ride up thru georgetown and riding the loop train ,old steam locomotive
is awsome .the continental divide ,eisenhower tunnel etc, all a great ride.

I don't know if you followed the news but 89A through Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona nearly suffered a significant alteration. Below is the latest from the Southwest fire website:

BRINS (4,317 A.; 90% contained) is 2 miles NE of Sedona in Coconino National Forest. The fire area received measurable rain yesterday. Crews made good progress yesterday building line around difficult areas of the fire. The closure of US Hwy. 89A will be lifted today for residents and area business owners only.

I don't believe any homes or businesses were lost but it came very close right up to the edge of 89A. The part that is most disturbing is it was set by a homeless person who left their campfire.

Now an update to the post I made earlier this week:

WARM (58,470 acres; 20% contained) is burning 3 miles S of Jacob Lake in Kaibab National Forest. Started by lightning, WARM had been managed for wildland fire use and is now being suppressed as of Sunday evening. AZ Hwy. 67 is closed from Jacob Lake to Grand Canyon National Park's North Rim. North Kaibab Ranger District is closed to the public. Crews will continue flanking the W and S sides of the fire through burnout operations and will use dozers where feasible

So hopefully they can get this one under control. I must give a big thank you to the men and women that do this wildfire fighting. That is a really tough job. So people, be careful with your fire this weekend if you live in the West, people cause most wildfires and it's DRY out here.

That area was shut down last week because of the forest fire. I am not sure what it will look like now.

We are talking about a trip up on the rim. It's not a problem for me, but the wife has one of those no work, no pay jobs. No vacation, no holidays. I need to find out how much of the forest is shut down also.....

Highway 64 from Brevard to Murphy in the western NC mountains is one of the great drives... but the entire Blue Ridge Highway is a drive I aspire to accomplish....soon.
So many highways ... so little money...

Snowy Mountians in southern Wyoming

Headed west from larmie Wyoming through the snowy range is a fantastic 2 lane that drops you back at the interstate just east of Rawlins. Fantastic mountian views, alpine ponds, great camping, and a supper cool observation tower at one overlook.
