Gene,
Wasn't it 1966 when the British Society of Automotive Engineers determined that motor oil was a liquid and for the Lucas system to work you needed electricity.

A little hijack is a good thing when there are a bazillion posts of gas prices.

Bob, funny you should mention motor oil. After the Triumph started to rust away after 3 years, I sold it. A couple of years later I repeated my trauma and bought a 2nd hand MGB. 1,000 miles after each oil and filter change, the oil pressure gauge would pin itself; goose the gas pedal, and it would come down to normal. After a while, it would pin itself; goose the gas pedal, etc. Changed the sending unit, no change. Ran kerosene through the oil channels for 20 or 30 seconds to clear gunk, but no change. Never found out what was wrong. So, MG's could change oil to a solid. In between those 1,000 mile oil changes, somebody would leave a piece of paper on the road and that would hit the exhaust system and tear up parts of it. The Lucas electrics didn't work with or without electricity. They were fun cars to drive though.

In addition to these reasons, the demand in developing economies like China and India, the war in Iraq has added to the demand. Supposedly, the US government has also added a tax to diesel to help pay for the war...these and many other "reasons" have been given for the extra cost for high diesel cost.

If American consumers ever latch onto diesel autos in this country, look out for even higher priced diesel.

I forgot where I read it now. It was some time this past summer when everyone was complaining about the difference in diesel vs. gasoline. It may have been on the www.oil-price.net, but I'm not sure. I'll try to find it again.

Ok, back to gas prices. I haven't gone anywhere in days, so I don't have a clue.

Looking at these fuel prices sure confirms I would not want to pay for the premium grade of fuel required in many foreign cars...
with a diesel you at least get the advantages of increased mpg to offset the current higher cost of diesel fuel whether in a car or truck. (Of course, when talking TV's, there is nothing better for pulling.) Can't say that for cars that run on high test...just the opposite, they most often return the worst fuel economy...and high test will never cost less than other grades.
I wonder why some Folks don't stop to consider the added cost of premium fuel when purchasing some of these cars...rather fuelish (pun intended). So many of these small foreign cars require high test, don't get very good mpg, and can barely seat 4!
@MW, @EXUS, &CCURA, to (not) name a few...AFAIK, they all require hight test...

Two under $2.00

Hi, today we have two grades of fuel under $2.00 at the local Shell Station.

Regular.................$1.89

Mid-Grade.............$1.99

Premium................$2.09*

Diesel...................$2.69

Note: We chose our vehicles for what we wanted and the grade of fuel required was never a consideration. At $0.20 per gallon more, I'm not going broke, nor would I chose an undesireable vehicle just to save 20 cents per gallon. If the premium price of Premium fuel was that bad, I wouldn't have bought an Airstream travel trailer.

'Ya sound like me Bob, it just don't make no sense to offer us an "economy" car that you have to use 97 in. I drove one that came into the shop, looking for something to trade it in on. Seems you can't do anything in it but drive around looking very, very small.

Costco in our area was $1.76 yesterday when I filled up. Some of the the local stations range from $1.79 to $1.89 and are changing from one to two times a day. Sometimes higher and other times lower. It seems we are having somewhat of a price war between 2 or 3 stations. Seems like the good old days. Most of the people I work with believe that it will take off like the space shuttle by summertime.
