"Mid-MO: Regular gas = $2.39 That's down .20 in 3 days in two different drops. What's happening here? No move yet in diesel-why?"

My guess diesel will not come down like the gasoline prices have. Probably because diesel is used so much for winter heat in some parts of the country.

Here in the Omaha area I see 89 octane (10% alcohol) going for $2.46. Has dropped about 40 cents in a relatively short time. Nice.

drove by a shell station this evening....
regular 2.32
premium 2.72
diesel 3.29....yes that is correct.

1.5 blocks east a valero station....
regular 2.37
premium 2.59
diesel 2.69

both were lsd not ulsd....

i filled at the valero...
sure hope they aren't blending regular with diesel!

nearly 20$ difference for fill between these two stations...

cheers

Kiplinger Letter

For all of you Kiplinger Letter readers out there.... and other interested parties.. this blurb just came out today......thought this was interesting.. if forecast plays correct, it shows how we sit on a teeter-totter....called the oil can... so hurry-up..fire up your tow vehicle while can.. get that Airstream on the road.. it's time to take a road trip...
The oil price outlook has taken a surprising downward shift
in the past couple of weeks. Why? More-sanguine forecasts
on this year’s hurricane season. No sign so far that tensions with
Iran
are escalating. Oil inventories that are more plentiful than expected. And the psychological boost from the big discovery in the
Gulf of Mexico, even though it probably won’t produce a drop of crude until 2009 or so.
IF there’s smooth sailing, expect oil at $60 a barrel by year end
and the average U.S. pump price for gasoline around $2.25 a gallon.

hi az' and others...

gas prices usually fall after labor day...
and i'd agree the news about the gulf oil discovery
and the non-hurricane
and the quiet regarding iran all play into pricing...
what might happen next week if there is any terrorist activity?

also when bigwigs make public statements prices follow.
so this week when some of the world experts said
oil supply risks are low and prices should fall...
they started falling...
last spring a saudi king said crude prices were too high...
and over 2-3 days prices dropped 10 bucks...

recently i read about a concept called 'storage arbitrage'...google it.

this ny times piece about how new investors are pushing price issues made sense to me...

while oil and gas trade on the futures market as commodities...
storage is yet another layer in price supports...
and the arbitrage market for storage is a new investor game...

investing in petrol takes on so many forms...
while we just think about what comes out of the pump....
or out of the ground...

i agree time for a road trip!

cheers

Chevron gas prices today: Regular $3.09 naturally all the others were higher. A couple of days ago the regular was $3.05 at same station. But it is Friday... we are on I-5.... Our prices are always really high.

At the lowest-priced station here, an ARCO, regular dropped to 2.69 on Thursday. It was 2.79 on Monday. Other stations generally have a 2.89 price.

I'm always amazed how two stations next to one another can maintain very different prices for essentially the same commodity. People must either be loyal to a brand, must believe that there really is a difference in the gasoline, must not be price conscious, or must be driving around blind. Amazing.

Can't believe I'm so blooming excited about outrageous gas prices, but they are down, down, down from where they were just a couple of weeks ago.
