Yep, Gorda is just South of me and is a bit remote. Just remind yourself to fill up from ether direction prior to entering this neck of the woods.

We were thinking of going along the California coast this coming September, then I saw the story in the NY Times about Gorda (Big Sur was pretty awful too) and decided southern Cal was not for us. I'm wondering about the prices along the northern Cal. coast and Oregon.
In 2006, we paid around $5.40 in Yukon Terr. just south of the Arctic Circle, but I expect that with Canadian taxes and in a place so remote. You just ignore the dollars on the pump, hand over your credit card and just sign.
Last week, in Grand Junction it was around $3.029 and in the small towns up around $3.20. Colorado has been lower than most of the country for quite some time but we're catching up. Speculators and fear have been keeping the price up way above the cost of production for years and the government is happy to go along with it and give the oil companies tax breaks. What a country we have become!

You have to remember one thing. Carmel California is the most exspensive real estate in the country. Anywhere along the coast that is near recreation on HWY 1 is always 50 cents more than a few miles inland. Maybe make some plans with this in mind.
CrawfordGene, If you have never been down the west coast (Washington included) you are missing one of the greatest trips in the US. The beauty of the rainforests and remote beaches of Washington and Oregon, the light houses and Sea Lion caves. The Redwoods and Seqoiua trees of northern califoria. San Fran. is also a very unique city if you have never been there. San Simion and the spanish chirches dating back to the 1700's. The Carmel/Monterey area is wonderful (17 mile drive is a must) on down to Big Sir California. It is one of a half dozen most desireable US trips...maybe number one or two on most peoples well traveled lists. Don't pass it up if possible.

This is an email I received last week. Maybe if we only buy from the stations that do not buy their oil from the Oil mongers in the Middle east we can make them hurt in the you know where!
Last Thursday I filled up at 325.9, that day the barrel of oil went to over 100 and the next morning the same gas was 329.9, interesting how this works.
These companies import Middle Eastern oil:
Shell.......................... 205,742,000 barrels
Chevron/Texaco....... ...144,332,000 barrels
Exxon /Mobil...............130,082,000 barrels
Marathon/Speedway...117,740,000 barrels
Amoco..........................62,231,000 barrels
Citgo Gas comes from South America, from a Dictator who hates Americans.
Do the math at $30/barrel, these imports amount to over $18 BILLION! (Oil is now $90-$95 a barrel)
Here are some large companies that
DO NOT
import Middle Eastern oil:
Sunoco..................0 barrels**
Conoco................0 barrels
Sinclair................0 barrels
BP/Phillips........... 0 barrels
Hess...................0 barrels
ARC0. .............. 0 barrels
Also: Pilot, Flying J, Love's, RaceTrac, Valero

For What It's Worth
A lot of folks can't understand how we came
to have an oil shortage here in our country.
~~~
Well, there's a very simple answer.
~~~
Nobody bothered to check the oil.
~~~
We just didn't know we were getting low.
~~~
The reason for that is purely geographical .
~~~
Our OIL is located in
~~~
ALASKA
~~~
California
~~~
Coastal Florida
~~~
Coastal Louisiana
~~~
Kansas
~~~
Oklahoma
~~~
Pennsylvania
and
Texas
~~~
Our
DIPSTICKS
are located in
Washington , DC !!!
Any Questions ???
NO? I didn't Think So.
We drove from Langley, BC to Boise, ID and back on Tues/Wed of this week. Paid $3.179 in Boise, in OR we paid $3.279 and in WA we paid $3.459. We had a lot of problems with the Boise and OR gas with water in it and ended up having to add Methyl Hydrate on each fill up or it would freeze up going over the mountain passes. The cost and issues with the water in the gas negated any savings we got by purchasing the cheap gas instead of going to a Shell/Chevron/Texaco/Exxon station and paying a couple of cents more. So now we know for future.
Thursday, 3/20/08 I paid $3.53.9 in central Ca. gateway to Sequoia National park. A little later on my way home I could have paid $3.52.9 and saved myself a few pennies. Oh well.
Paid $3.06 at WalMart in Picayune, MS yesterday - only after shopping and buying a gift card for the extra .03 cents off or it would have been $3.09 at the regular price. Saved myself .42 cents on 14 gallons, every penny counts.
