You know one thing you can do to offset some of these increases is to look into some of the credit cards which offer discounts. I'm currently carrying a Discover Gas Card which gives me a 5% cash back rebate on gas purchases, no matter what brand of gas. There is an annual maximum, but it is cash back in my pocket. I think some of the oil companies also have a similar programs that reward you with cash back or free gas.

During these times you need to take advantage of as many of these perks as you can get. Just be sure to pay it off at the end of the month because the interest rate is brutal on these cards.

Silvertwinkie, you must live closer to the city or something. Gas in Chicago is always much high than the suburbs.
Yea, I'm about 15 miles north of downtown. Sad thing is that the prices I quoted are among the least expensive in town.

Good idea, Jack. I believe AAA offers a similar card which I am going to look into before the trip to the International.

Good point

We have a rewards card through Chase that gives us 5% back on fuel, as well as something like 3% back on groceries at the market and 1% on resturants. I always use the Chase card instead of ATM where possible. But as Jack stated, you must pay it off monthly or your savings go out the window.

Sad times:
At the BP on the corner of Van Buren and Ashland-
$3.61 for regular. $3.71 for silver.
That was yesterday, when I was on my way home from my dad's place on the southside.
Today: in Glen Ellyn at the BP on Roosevelt Road, near College of DuPage-
$3.23 for regular.

OUCH!
Prices still the same as last post above!

Also Lilmouse, I just recalled that the Cook County fuel taxes are higher than the DuPage and other collar counties, which makes it an even bigger joy to live in Strogerland.

A friend went to Greece last year and rented a car. He checked just last week and the prices of fuel is just what it was last year. Now that was close to $4.50 a gallon US but they do get health care as a side benifit. Neather health care of fuel has gone upi in Greece. What is our side benifit?

New Jersey has started down in the last 2 or 3 days. Peaked at $2.85 and now $2.73.

"Die"sel at $2.52 thank you very much. Down from $2.80 2 weeks ago. The 130 mile daily commute eats up the lunch money at those prices

On our trip to Zion, we saw anywhere between 3.09 (Farmington and Kanab) and 3.36 (outside of Navajo National Monument) for regular.

But look at it this way: We needed the vacation, and our rough calculations indicate that the whole thing cost us ~$100 more. For a hundred bucks, it was well worth it to go! Do the restaurant a couple times less, and ride the bicycle a few more times than usual here at home, and we're even.

On a related note -- left Miami last week for a Summer in our Sovereign and deliberately set out to max range. Been squeezing 14 mpg average out of the Titan vice the normal 10 -11mpg. Hard to putter along at about 53 mph (the truck's "sweet spot" for mileage) but happy, happy, happy at the fuel pump.

given how far the guinness must travel 2.50$ this week is a sweet'r treat.
