Hello Phoenix!

Well, really, "Hello Mesa"!

$3.19 9/10 for unleaded on June 20th, in Mesa, with our dad's Fry's grocery store discount. Oh how we wished we had a tanker truck.

$3.97 in San Francisco the next day.

Still $3.9 in Corpus Christi for diesel. 10-cents cheaper in San Antonio, yet we have 3 major refineries here. Can anyone say monopoly ( a single gas retailer with a few token additions).

On my recent road trip:

Texas: $3.39
New Mexico: $3.49
Colorado: $3.59
Idaho: $3.64
Oregon: $3.89 (and that whole silly not allowed to pump your own gas thing)*
Washington: $3.59

* Note to Oregon legislature: This whole not pumping your own gas because it helps the economy by giving people jobs pumping gas thing is a crock. If you think a 30c/gallon premium for the whole state so a couple of thousand people can have minimum wage jobs pumping gas is helping the economy, you're nuts. 30c premium * 30 gallons is $9.00 on a tank of gas, and the kid earns, what, 50 cents of it... The other $8.50 isn't going into the local economy. If you had cheaper gas across the entire state, you'd do a lot better than those couple of thousand jobs. How much industry has avoided Oregon because of this additional cost? It's a no-brainer.

On top of that with the Oregon thing, I've found often even though *they* pump your gas, you still have to get out of your car and go into a store to pay for it. "Mini-serve" I've only seen that a few times, but still.. It's their way to help you with spontaneous soda/chip's purchases.... Just plain sucks in the snow though....... I'd rather give the kid a tip and stay in my car/truck!

A petrol station in the town of Filderstadt near Stuttgart, Germany, skyrocketed the price of super gasoline to a prohibitive level of €9.99 per liter ($14.60) or $55 per gallon on Easter Monday, in an attempt to…prevent customers from buying the fuel. German news site ‘The Local’ reported that the Esso petrol station raised the price to €9.99 a liter as it was running low on the fuel amid a nationwide shortage.
Despite warning signs posted at the pumps, several clients fueled their cars and had a very, very unpleasant surprise at the cash register when they learned the amount of money they had to pay. One of them was asked to pay €209.98 ($307) for the 21 liters of super gasoline he put in his BMW, while another driver learned that she owed just under €200 ($292.5) for 20 liters of fuel!

Angry customers called the police and refused to pay the bills, but they were told they had to otherwise the Esso station would make a complaint. Motorists eventually paid for the petrol but were hoping to sort out a compromise with Esso on Tuesday. The owner of the station did not comment on the matter.

A spokesperson for the Auto Club Europa said the case resembled the black market. “It’s barely believable that global companies blunder into a supply bottleneck like drunks into a village pond,” said Rainer Hillgärtner. “The relevant inspectorate has to investigate. That goes also for unfair price rises and exorbitant prices at the pump,” he added.

One in five stations in Stuttgart area had no supplies of super gasoline on Monday afternoon because of the Easter traffic, the holiday ban on fuel tankers and logistical problems for petrol companies associated with the introduction of the E10 ethanol fuel. The moral of the story? Even on €10 per liter, some people will still buy gasoline...

Fuel prices

Here in the hot, wet Midwestern USA, just 60 miles SW of Chicago, this morning's unleaded gas is running $3.79.9p/gal @most local stations. I can't imagine having to pay the astronomical prices posted for Stuttgart, Germany!! I fear the mayhem!

By the time we begin our sojourn N next month, I anticipate a reversal in costs and the gas prices will increase yet again.

Safe, happy trails all. =)
