Just came back from Kassel, Germany. Diesel is going for a Euro 1.39 / liter. Regular is Euro 1.56 / liter. That's $7.51/gallon for diesel and $8.43/gallon for regular.

And I saw a Chevy Silverado. Didn't have time to make it to the German Airstream dealer.

We dipped earlier to the $3.80's until the Mississippi started to flood down south. Price went back up to $3.99 and they blame it on fear of flooding in the areas of the southern refineries. Refineries say they are fine and they have no shortages. Pipe line breaks up in North Dakota, price goes up again. There seems to be no shortage of excuses as to why the price stays high. Every time there seems to be a report stating no shortages, supplies are high, usage is low, we get a small respite and within days there seems to be a new reason to jack it back up to $3.99.

What's interesting in this area is that many stations seem to be pricing diesel as much as $.20 below regular. It's been a long time since I've seen that happen. Not sure why.

The no shortage of excuses reminds me of the daily analysis on why the financial markets rise or fall -- it's almost funny, they always have a one-line "excuse" to explain why the markets went up a percent or down, as if this captures the myriad aspects of changes for thousands of transactions for millions of investors.

Let's see, gas prices rise and fall on oil giants' speculation on what will make them the most money.

We saw an interesting analysis yesterday comparing prices at the consumer pump around the world. USA was cheapest, Canada next best, Netherlands, I think was highest. Most telling though was the fuel prices were nearly identical across all countries, but taxes were hugely disparate The retail price difference was simply the difference in taxes.

Diesel is frequently cheaper in other countries (as it was in the US until around 2004) because they don't refine as much of the sulfur out as required here.

I remember the "good ole' days" of diesel...twice the mileage, half the price and a tax break ta' boot! Ahem...lower sulfur? Uh huh, and that means what Mr. Oil Executive?... That you are refining diesel as much as gasoline? You can bet our collective rear ends that if we all went back to burning kerosene it would somehow suddenly cost twice as much as gasoline. Remember when filling your 7lb propane tank was less than $10 bucks... That wasnt too long ago either! I swear Harvard, Yale & Stanford have an entire semester in their business programs dedicated to "lame a**ed excuses" for fuel price fluxuations. Mad!

fill up next time:

Here are some large companies THAT DO NOT import Middle Eastern oil:

Sunoco.................0 barrels
Conoco.................0 barrels
Sinclair.................0 barrels
BP / Phillips............0 barrels
Hess....................0 barrels
ARC0...................0 barrels
Maverick..............0 barrels
Flying J................0 barrels
Valero.................0 barrels
Kwik Fill...............0 barrels
Murphy Oil USA*...0 barrels

*Sold at Wal-Mart, Sam's Club - gas is from South Arkansas and fully USA owned and produced.
*Not only that but they give scholarships to all children in their town who finish high school and are legal US citizens..

All of this information is available from the U.S. Department of Energy and each company is required to state where they get their oil and how much they are importing

I did find regular for $3.48 yesterday here in St Louis..
This is surprising that BP/Phillips and Conoco aren't getting oil from the Middle East..
I had heard earlier that QuickTrip didn't get oil from the Middle East, so I was going out of my way to go there, and they are not on the list..

I do get more gas at SAMs than anywhere else though..

The Bigger Picture

My brother just moved his 40' fifth wheel from Columbus, Ohio to Las Vegas, Nevada. It took 3 - 12 hr. driving days and $1200.00 in fuel to make the trip. OUCH!!!

Sounds like about 7 miles per gallon. Glad I don't have a 40' trailer.

Via I-40 it's 2,209-miles, direct. At $4.25/gl for diesel or 282/gls, it was in the vicinity of 7.8 mpg.

With one of our '34 aluminum trailers -- and a 2nd/3rd Generation Dodge CTD (or early Duramax) -- it would have been closer to 14-mpg via the southern route, and 157-gls, or $670 (according to the half-dozen owners who've posted here and on other forums; 13-16 mpg overall) assuming a 60-mph travel speed. (We can add in or subtract for heavily laden truck, unfavorable winds, etc. But it's hard to get below 12 at a reasonable speed).

It's a 44-hr trip at an overall speed of 50-mph (which includes fuel & rest stops).

A 61-mph average (per above) indicates he was likely traveling at or near 70-mph.

$600 buys from a long list of luxuries. Reduced wear on the [better spec] TT & TV increases the difference.

Finally have seen below $3.90 diesel of late. Am still above 20-mpg in town with this 7k pickup, and at .13 cpm the past 20k miles (22.5 mpg average).
