Gene...While your statement may indeed be true, I don't think the lack of 'road improvement' funds is due to the existing (low?) tax rate on road fuels...

"In the present anti-tax climate, it is very hard to increase gas taxes and therefore there is less and less money available to pay for roads."

Here in California, where we have more road vehicles than any other state, we have HUGE tax revenues from fuel sales! Also, the current increase in fuel prices is a real WINDFALL for California, due to higher amounts paid for sales tax!

California is known for 'raiding' these tax accounts for other uses that are unrelated to road repairs...I think I've read in the past where Cal-Trans spends LESS than half of their funds on actual construction/repair of our roads and highways - That's just not right, and an inefficient use of the funds it receives - Cal-Trans get's their operating, pension, etc., funds right off the top, and road construction has to get in line...

It's a fact that government just can't operate as efficiently as the private sector, and the state of our nation's roads are another shining example...

It's not that they don't have the funds, it's a matter government's bloated, wasteful operating procedures...IMHO!...I guess that goes under, "So, what else is new"...

Nanaimo prices Feb. 24, on Vancouver Island
Reg. 111.9 c/l
Diesel 116.9 c/l
Conversion is $ 3.7854 Liter per US gallon. US price then would be $4.247 US gallon for gas and $ 4.235 for diesel.

I just had to bring this up again. The first post in this thread was in 2003.
Nice prices, huh?
My mini cooper runs on premium, so I do not look at the prices, I just look at the pretty car and try to forget.

This morning regular unleaded gas was $3.73 a gallon in the Oakland Hills, where we live. $3.99 for premium.

We filled up the Prius' tank yesterday for $3.49 a gallon and we were happy to pay it. Well, at least happier to pay $3.49 than $3.73. So were quite a few other motorists. There was line to gas up!

We paid $3.79 a gallon for diesel two days ago in San Leandro.

Yesterday was mostly 3.249 for Reg in Melbourne, FL - was 3.199 at WalMart and every pump had a line. Didn't leave Land Yacht Harbor today so might have jumped a bit more. This up from 3.099 at most places just a couple of days ago.

Here's a shocker for you...ok, the gas station wasn't open yet and this was their way of keeping people from coming in...quite effective.
