What did you forget to do before driving away?

Today I left the campsite and drove about 5 miles before a couple on a motorcycle pulled up along side pointing and waving.
I pulled onto the shoulder to see why they were trying to get my attention.
I had left the compartment with the city water hookup open. Surprisingly nothing fell out.
I also neglected to put the cover back on the drain. One of the hooks was worn off by the road surface. It is not nearly as tight with 2 hooks as it was with 3.
I have driven away with storage compartments open and just happened to see them in my rear view mirror.
I have driven away with the tv antenna up and realized it at the dump station or garbage can.

The X-chocks once, but only managed a couple of feet before I realised. Doh!

No matter what your "season" in life - young but distracted by children or older like us with "CRS" disease - make a departure check list; laminate it; and use it every time. These little airstream parts are expensive!

We always do a complete walk around before pulling away. Then within a 1/4 mile or so, I pull over and do another, including the hitch.

I've destroyed a cheap wheel chock before by pulling the trailer over it. The lady who owned the trailer before me made a quite lengthy hookup checklist that still hangs next to the door that I use on occasion. I mean this checklist is more detailed than the checklists I used when I flew helicopters in the Marines, lol. Helps though.

Hi FLMarine...any chance you could post that checklist? Newbie here and a comprehensive list would be great! Cheers. John

Oh crumb, reading this just now reminded me I left a nice new red chock behind today! Dang. Knew it was there but just drove off, third one this year. Time to make a list. Every stop I make I walk around and especially check all parts of hitching up. Just have to remember the chocks.

As I'm pulling out of the site, I usually take a moment to look back over it - our blocks and chocks are bright orange and yellow, so it's unlikely I'm going to miss one of those. (They're also the last things we pull as we're leaving.)

We haven't left anything open on the trailer yet, but on one trip, we were about halfway home over some bumpy roads, and my wife said, "That slide-out drawer in the bumper doesn't have any catches to hold it closed, right?" I pulled over immediately, and fortunately it was still closed. I latched it and we were on our way.

I thought about ways to prevent doing it again all the way home...
The sequence of events...
I rinsed the slinky, put it away, and drove away.
I should put the drain cap on and close the compartment BEFORE I rinse the slinky and put it away.
Do things the same way in the same order every time.
My wife had already gone.
When we are together I could get her to remind me.
There are so many times I drive away without extending the mirrors. I have worked out a method of extending the mirrors "on the fly".
Let the window down, fold the mirror in, stretch it out, fold it out, let the window up- have my wife do the same on her side...

Probably the most important and easiest thing is when you pull out of your campsite, stop after you get out of the site, go back and look around for anything you forgot and left. Then, when you are walking back to your rig, look for anything open or dangling.

That pre-supposes that you have enough organisation to actually make and use one. We tried, even had the kids checking things off but it only lasted a couple of camps. I always have a walk around before leaving, then again after we've just rolled off the site. Spotted one of the Fantastic Fans open on my final check a couple of weeks ago; not a biggie if we'd not seen it but it did prove the worth of the final run through.

We plan on an exhaustive list laminated with a felt pen that is attached

I'm too darn forgetful not to be anal and such!
