Alaska travel

My wife and I went from Maine to Akaska to Florida the period of July through September,2008. We had NO problems of any kind. But we took precautions. Our 32' Excella is 20 years old. We replaced both axles, including the brakes. We bought Maxxi tires with an "E" rating. I covered all the gas lines on the bottom of the trailer with heavy vinyl hose.I must say I was glad to have the gravel guards . I think the most important thing is just to use common sense. We had no broken headlights even though they were not protected,no windshield problems. We drove up the infamous "Dalton Highway", the oil road to the North Slope,up over the Brooks range and down onto the North Slope.
Plan your trip. There aren't as many routes as you would think. We took the ferry from Haines to Prince Rupurt,Canada coming back.
People say don't worry about bears, but always assume one nearby might be having a bad day. At least carry bear spray. The locals I met while I was fishing the rivers always had firearms. It was very easy to get a Canadian permit for my 12 ga. Ithaca, but no handguns allowed in Canada.Keep your fuel tank full every chance you get when away from the cities.

Way cool vintage pics!

I am curious, in the tailgate picnic pic, it says his Dad built a trailer side mount for a table. Has anyone done this? Have any pics?

Look for my post on: Has anyone ever had a bear climb in?
I now say NEVER go into bear country without a couple of cans of bear pepper spray, it is different from personal pepper spray.
Plus after reading lots of stories on bear attacks, they happened so fast that a gun wasn't as helpful, though I wouldn't mind having both if the occasion popped up again....

I remember the table used a bracket inside where you lifted the end of the table up to initially engage it. Then you let the end of the table down to lock it in the bracket. I don't have any pictures but I know my dad put the same type of bracket on the outside of the trailer above the wheel well. My dad used to like to do those 'special' things. I still find them in the '92 they gave us.
