On the Oregon Trail

Bear Lake was just too beautiful, but alas we headed on the trail following it north to montpelier and soda springs, up to pocatella, blackfoot and upwards toward the craters of the moon.

It was a fun place and then as we headed west on US 26, I wondered how those wagons crossed that lava flow ground...

We were and are amazed at the irrigated farmland in alll of idaho we have seen so far.

we now rest on the banks of the snake river...glenns ferry at three island state park amist much history of the oregon trail....

Beautiful pictures! Thanks for sharing.

I always thought I went west in a covered wagon in a prior life.

Travel safe,

Maggie

Did you miss the Idaho Potato Museum?

You can buy a poster of Marilyn Monroe in a potato sack there.

Today we depart McCall, Idaho....Payette Lake and the Payette river are indeed beautiful. This is a great area.

Beautiful pictures!

We were heading back to Montana and Idaho this summer, but it's just not gonna happen. We were very taken by the beauty of that area, and want to spend 4-6 weeks just poking around and enjoying it all. Next year.

Travel safe, you four!

As GetOutDoors said, don't miss the Baker City interpretive center. I believe it was up in the hills above Baker City where we saw the original Oregon Trail and deep ruts through the rock and signs of early campsites. An amazing side trip not to be missed. We are heading to Oregon in August for a September bike ride down the coast. Can't wait.

Unsurpassed beauty

We thought the McCall, Id area was beautiful.......but that was before we made the journey north continuing our trip. We headed north up Idaho 55 to meadows, Idaho and the intersection of us 95 and the scenic beauty increases exponentially. Beginning at meadows one picks up the little
salmon river which begins as a trickle as it heads north towards riggings where it is a full blown raging whitewater river.

Then continuing north on 95 one finds the road going up a very steep and long incline into white bird, Idaho....the white bird summit @4200ft .

From there we headed to grangeville and took Idaho 13 as a way to get to us 12 and orofino, Idaho. From there as one winds among the canyons and the Clearwater river as it winds it way into orofino, Idaho. Our destination was dworshak state park which is a magnificent 24 mile drive from orofino...and a 10 mile 10 percent downgrade with numerous switchbacks to get to the park on the edge of dworshak resivour.......just beautiful

hell's gate

We left dworshak state park after a pleasant hike around the lake.it really is a
a trip coming out of the valley...a 10 percent upgrade and numerous switchbacks for about 10 miles...and then another 15 miles of 7-8 percent down grade into orofino.

The trip, then down us 12 to Lewiston was very scenic. After settling into the park we took the trip up us 95 to Moscow, Idaho and then over to Pullman,wa and the return trip back on us 195 and then back down the Lewiston grade coming back into Lewiston....a spectacular view of the Clearwater and Snake rivers from that vantage point.

The next stop on the trip and the end of the line for this thread will be the Baker City birthday rally
