Westward HO!

Our month long great western adventure begins a week from today and we hope to see other Forum members along our route. We'll be overnighting along the route West in state parks and state recreation areas on our way to meet the Grandchildren in Grand Teton National Park, camping there at Colter Bay for a few nights and then up to Grants Campground in Yellowstone National Park for several nights. The "Grands" and parents fly home and then my little Sis and Bro-In-Law arrive. We'll move up to The Paradise Valley for a few nights and begin fishing our way across SW Montana. We'll eventually move over to the Red Lodge area camping in Custer National Forest South of Red Lodge. Upon leaving we'll head over to The Black Hills, try fishing there along with sightseeing. Along the way home we'll stop for a bit in Kimball, S.D. to show the gals our pheasant hunting "Digs" before making the treck back home. We certainly expect to see some "Bauxite" along our route and hope that it's you and yours. Have a great Summer of camping in your Airstreams.

With an itinerary like that we'll expect photographic documentation of the events and happenings.

Have fun,

Kevin

We'll be in Grants Village from 7-30 until 8-3 and in Madison from 8-5 until 8-9. Maybe we'll run into each other.

My wife and I returned yesterday from a wonderful 3,800 mile trek that took us from So. Calif. to Lake Tahoe CA, Grand Teton & Yellowstone NP, Custer SD, Devils Tower WY and back (with many points in between). We had the pleasure of staying in Colter Bay for 4 nights and really enjoyed our time there.

Here are a couple of observations about the Teton/Yellowstone area:
  • Cell phone/data coverage was spotty at Colter Bay. I had limited success with Sprint while my wife had no coverage with ATT. WiFi is available at various locations within the village and is free.
  • There is a lot of road work in progress on Hwy 191 between the parks and a significant amount of road work in progress within Yellowstone. Expect delays.
  • With the afore mentioned road work and the large number of visitors in Yellowstone, plan your day trips earlier in the day.
Have a great time on your trip. Here are a few photos from ours.

Enjoy!

Good information. It seems we've never been to Yellowstone when there wasn't roadwork underway and I suppose it's due to the short season and severe Winter damage. Glad you had a great trip out there and thanks.

Enjoy!
Did you stay in the section with no hookups or the "RV" park portion? Any insight on the CG would be nice.

HiHoAgRV,
I might be able to shed some light on the Colter Bay Campground. Stayed there Sept. 09. Site D109. Pull thru for shorter rig combo because of a tree on one side and a bolted in curb on the other make it tight to make the curve. The parking spot is curved on this site and shaded. I had a 22ft. truck towing a narrow body 23ft, A/S and just barely fit. Also the curb is something you have to step over each time you enter or leave your trailer. That site was OK for one night.
The rest rooms were clean in this section but no shower or electricty hook ups. There is a dump in loop (I) and a spigot to fill your water tank at the dump station, yes it's potable water.
I would try for E loop. Looks like better sites, but was closed last year in Sept.
The people at the check in at the gate will help find something to suit the length of trailer and type of site. Make sure you give them an accurate length of the entire rig.
Camp fires were OK and a fire ring was provided at the site along with a big picnic table.

Just a note about Grants Village Campground in Yellowstone. I stayed there on Sept 19th in 2009. Could only stay one night as they close the whole campground on the 20th for the year.
The ranger said that they will be snowed under soon. The next day when we headed out it was starting to snow in the mountains we were driving thru. We encountered lots of frozen precip on the road to Cody.

Leaving our Virginia homestead in good hands we departed mid-morning on our August adventure to WYO, MT and SD to sightsee and fly fish our way across the landscape. Our first night found us deep in the forest at Obannon Woods State Park, Indiana, a beautiful location south of I-64 and off the Ohio River. What a gem!

Just when we thought the campsites couldn't get any better we found Arrow Rock Campground in Missouri above the Missouri River and next to the Village of Arrow Rock, a National Historic Landmark. What a gem this place is! If you're ever in the area, this place is a must do. It's a small Williamsburg, VA. The campground is small but just perfect! No internet but your dish will pick up a good signal.

Next camp is on the Nebraska Platte River and then on to Rawlins, WYO. I hope all the campsites are a good as the past two.

Camping in the Lodgepole Pines on Yellowstone Lake. Brrrrr!
There's so much Bauxite up here we finally lost count. Very nice to see so many Airstreamers out this month.

The Year Of The Bear

It appears to be "The Year Of The Bear" out west. During our stay in and around Yellowstone NP we've seen seven (7) Grizzlies! What a treat it's been for us and especially my wife, daughter and her family who've never seen Grizzlies. This morning's Wall Street Journal has a good story about a monster black bear that's been a huge problem for Incline Village, NEV. The story goes on to mention the bear problems in CA as well. For we tourists, it's pretty cool to be able to see these bears roaming free.

We'll be there the whole month of September. Where did you see the most, around Tower Falls? Thanks.
