West Virginia - Looking for "don't miss" suggestions

My husband and I will be heading out to West Virginia in May and staying throughout the state for approximately 3 weeks. I'm hoping people will share suggestions of places that will really give us an appreciation of what the state has to offer. It can be best restaurant, hiking trail, view, town, shopping, historical site ... you name it. We're going to have plenty of time to relax and explore.

This will be our first "long" adventure and we're really looking forward to this trip. We purchased our 31' Classic two years ago but work has kept us fairly close to home. Now we're ready to take The Enterprise on the road!

Many thanks in advance.

Liz

On Rt 19 in Sutton WV is a very nice campground Flatwoods KOA. There amphitheater often has live concerts & other events, google it for more info.

Check out the New River Gorge National River (National Park Service). Hiking, biking, a drive down to river level below the route 19 bridge, and Thurmond, an abandoned coal town. Fayetteville has a few restaurants and a bit of shopping.

This is a terrific place to stay. Right on the lake, across a long walkway from the campground to the lodge, terrific restaurants, bike riding, kayaking, canoeing and a very difficult but beautiful Championship Golf Course. It is only two hours from our home, we stay here at least once per year. You must get reservations to secure a place as it is very popular. If you decide to stop here let us know, we may drop on down.

Years ago someone told me that Pipestem Resort SP was gorgeous -- in the SE corner of WV near the VA border and I-77 and I-64. Anyone know this park?

Pipestem SP

Thanks,

Peter

We are taking a small unit caravan from Vermont to Lewisburg WV. for the International Rally.

I would enjoy the drive down there as well as WV itself. The Delaware Water Gap is fun to visit

We are cutting down through the top of WV. and staying a several state parks before we get to Lewisburg WV. It is slow going time wise but very beautiful.

Seneca Rocks, the Radio Telescope, Cass Railroad, Pearl Buck House....and many more are worth the visit.

We are not going too west or south of Lewisburg but there are lots of places to explore.

Some places not mentioned yet: Blackwater Falls, Cranberry Glades, Highland Scenic Highway, Spruce Knob, Dolly Sods.

If you bike there is the Greenbrier River, Allegheny Highlands, and the North Bend Rail Trails.

Thanks so much for the great ideas!! It sounds like we'll be quite busy. We'll be staying at 3 different locations for 4 or 5 days each so we'll have plenty of time to hit the highlights. Tamarack will certainly be on our list as I quilt and my husband has taken

Our plans are to head south through PA, staying ~2 weeks in WV, will also go to Hocking Hills in OH before heading to Alumapalooza! We're really looking forward to our 1st extended trip.

Tamarack is very close to what I mentioned in post # 2. Reserve in a lower pull through as they are the best sites near the amphitheater.

We camped at Pipestem and Bluestone (and stayed in the Pipestem hotel) when we have gone to "West, by God, Virginia." It has been a long time but we enjoyed both. The hotel has a really nice indoor pool and a lovely restaurant with a spectacular view. Be sure to take your camera and eat early in the evening. And take the Tram down to the restaurant. There are other beautiful state parks in WV. To check out. And,yes, Tamarack is always a great place to stop and eat and shop.

Add Canaan Valley st Park. Nice campground and a good spot for day trips to Cass...Blackwater...Davis WV...and much more. I live not far from there so if you need anything let me know. I'm amazed that so many here on the Forum are so familiar with WV. It is a beautiful area. I will try to think of more places to enjoy and hope your visit is wonderful.
