Tamarack is very close to what I mentioned in post # 2. Reserve in a lower pull through as they are the best sites near the amphitheater.

Thumbs up I Agree

[QUOTE=Blackdog06;1756071]Some places not mentioned yet: Blackwater Falls, Cranberry Glades, Highland Scenic Highway, Spruce Knob, Dolly Sods.

If you bike there is the Greenbrier River, Allegheny Highlands, and the North Bend Rail Trails.[/QUOTE What Blackdog06 said. I especially liked the Dolly Sods area. Kind of other worldly by West Virginia standards. I felt like I had been transported to somewhere else.

We camped at Pipestem and Bluestone (and stayed in the Pipestem hotel) when we have gone to "West, by God, Virginia." It has been a long time but we enjoyed both. The hotel has a really nice indoor pool and a lovely restaurant with a spectacular view. Be sure to take your camera and eat early in the evening. And take the Tram down to the restaurant. There are other beautiful state parks in WV. To check out. And,yes, Tamarack is always a great place to stop and eat and shop.

Add Canaan Valley st Park. Nice campground and a good spot for day trips to Cass...Blackwater...Davis WV...and much more. I live not far from there so if you need anything let me know. I'm amazed that so many here on the Forum are so familiar with WV. It is a beautiful area. I will try to think of more places to enjoy and hope your visit is wonderful.

Watoga State Park is a great place to camp. Try to get a spot on the river. Watoga is just south of Marlinton.
Further south of Marlington is Beartown (day use) with its amazing rock formations. Don't miss this.
Another great campground is Lake Sherwood. This is on the state line next to Virginia. It is a National Forest Campground.

Pipestem SP

Thanks,

Never camped there, but the State Parks were a customer of ours so I've been to Pipestream and seen it a number of times, it looks very nice as did the campground.

The Exhibition Coal Mine in Beckley is a real gem of information. Be sure to take the underground tour. One of our all time favorite stops last year.

My grandson starts his freshman year this September at West Virginia University so I'm following this thread closely as I can see us airstreaming up there often!

Honestly, I can't say W. Virginia was high on our list, it was just convenient for our travels. But now that we're planning this trip I'm thinking we may have ben overlooking a quiet gem.

I was raised in WV (Smithburg & West Union - Doddridge County) and went to school there and still have relatives there. Its a beautiful state. You need to check out North Bend State Park and their 22nd Annual Bluegrass Festival (May 13 & 14, 2016. www.northbendsp.com. (Phone: 304-643-2931. The road down into the park off Route 50 is very winding and small. If you like biking the Rail Trail goes right thought the park from Parkersburg to Clarksburg (71 miles) and its really is beautiful (10 tunnels). Motor vehicles not permitted. I rode on it in 2008 and hope to do it again some time. Check it out www.northbendrailtrailstsatepark.com
