Wow, no buffalo! You were just not in the right spot at the right time.
They do seem to congregate, although we saw several huge bulls grazing off by themselves.
We stopped for lunch at a picnic spot, were all set up outside with our friends and Lily when a huge bull was seen wandering toward us through the trees! Yikes!! Took lily inside quickly, lest she provoke an attack, but he just kept right on going. Wasn't even interested in the raw veggies out on the table.
Lily seems to know these animals are not to trifle with, as even when they passed right by the Interstate she just let out a low growl rather than bark as she would have if it were a dog. Good girl, Lily.
In three weeks at Glacier and Yellowstone, we did not see a single bear, although lots of goats and sheep who liked to wander through the campground. I'll get pictures posted one of these days.
When we were at a campground in Waterton, there had been a mountain lion take out a deer there the week before, so lots of warnings. Didn't see any, but kept Lily close.
Between the animals, the mountains, the waterfalls/lakes/rivers, it was a splendiferous trip. Temps were cool to cold, which was lovely when it was 100 degrees at home.
What a beautiful country we live in.
. Currently in Moab, Utah, which is magnificent. Going to do Arches and Canyonland NP's.
