We are at 200 years since the end of the War of 1812. The US did badly in that one and was crushed at the Battle of St. Catherines (I think that was the name; if not, it was near there). But Britain, exhausted by the Napoleanic Wars, was glad to end it without regaining some territory it had lost in the American Revolution. Otherwise, every "South Canadian" would have health insurance and would be voting today in the 60 provinces.

Actually Gene it was the Americans who went to Europe and sued for peace since the did not relish the idea of a Britain no longer distracted in Europe being able to bring her full focus on the affairs in the new world.

I think both sides wanted out of that war. It is a lesson for Americans that rushing into a war when you are totally unprepared, overestimate your capabilities and listen to jingoists is not a good idea. Unfortunately, we haven't learned that lesson well. When I was in elementary school (shortly after the War of 1812) they taught us the US never lost a war. Technically true at the time—1812 was a draw; not true anymore.

Both here and in the USA the official line was that the war was won and the other side lost. Truth is nobody gained anything, much blood was spilled and the native people lost any hope of ever having their own sovereign place.

Funny how no one seems to be celebrating 200 years since the end of the war. One anniversary that gets ignored.

Hi All - thanks for keeping the Breakfast Show going. The "big deal" is still up-in-the-air. Business can be brutal.
Speaking of war and anniversaries - have been fooling around with the rebuild of this Canadian Ace's biplane: Destination: the 100th anniversary flyover at Vimy Ridge, April 2017.
Well, back to Walbernizing the FaN. It's supposed to start raining tomorrow. Could be the last sunny day until Spring!

Hi FaN, Is the restored biplane going to make it to the EAA fly in in Oshkosh, Wisconsin next year? If it is i will for sure capture its photo, for I will be there for a week.
Busy is good....

I could have put this post in a few places but usually come here when I can't make a decision. Seems safe. Friday afternoon I started out for Can Am because I needed a part. Problem was I could not remember what part. So I detoured and went to the boat launch in Owen Sound where I got a good boon dock in on Friday night. Also some Chinese food at a very busy Channing's restaurant. Owen Sound was the home of Billy Bishop and FaN there is a nice little museum in town. Also, for Canadian Art lovers, Tom Thomson was born in Owen Sound and there is a nice Art Gallery there with his paintings. Just down the road on the outskirts of Chatsworth, one finds the homestead of Nelly McLung. Nothing there but a plaque and evidence that they drew a real nasty piece of land. Field stones everywhere. While boon docking my head cleared and I remembered what part I needed. Two Burner assemblies for the cook top. We were down to one and coffee is a necessity. So on Saturday we drove cross country to Can Am for parts. Busy place. Ran into MrUKToad who was dropping off his Airstream for its annual hibernation. Went toFifty Point for Saturday night. I thought that I was going to winterize but it is just too nice out so will delay until next week end. Jim

I think this is a good place, Jim.
FaN.....the ladies are gathering in Wyoming the end of August 2016, instead of the west coast. Would love for you to join us.

Ladies in Wyoming?
When and where? Is this open to all?

It is open to all, Tommie!
We ladies were talking about it yesterday on my thread...having brunch together, of a sorts.
FaN had suggested a Shirley Valentine gathering on the west coast, where I tentatively planned to be next summer, but I am not going to do that as I want to get to Alumalina next fall, and it would just be too much.
Looking at the end of August, somewhere near the Tetons in Wyoming, as Gail and I will be in that area for Ray Eklunds boondocking adventure which commences August 14th for 10 days or so.
I don't know that Gail is doing the boondocking, and in fact think she is not, but she is coming to Wyoming and we are going to meet up somewhere in there.
Not doing a rally thread, as it will not be that formal, will just coordinate it on mine.
Join us!! And, help me get FaN there!
Maggie

Grand Tetons....
This is about a 2050 mile pull, one way. But, if it works out, fits in with my schedule, I think it is certainly possible....but only if FaN agrees to pull from her local......
I suspect the photo ops are as good as ever!

Hi Everyone! Sorry I haven't been around much - just too many things going on - like organizing/making the table decor for a WW1 themed fundraiser so we can get to Vimy in 2017. Do you know how long it takes to make about 200 feet of faux barbed wire? What a job that was.
Jim, thanks for the report on Owen Sound, Billy Bishop, and the museum there. Now I want to visit!
Maggie, Wyoming sounds great. I would love to be there. Will do everything to make that wish a reality.
MsMoto, we won't be able to make Oshkosh, but hope to fly it across to Canada next year as a lead-up to Vimy Ridge in 2017.
And on this day of Remembrance, the frame is well underway.....

Maggie, thanks. It was a lot of work, but it was my way of contributing to the memory of those who had served.
Yesterday (November 11th) was a day of memory, profundity.....and disappointment. The public was invited to view our warbirds and hangar (which was adorned with those little paper poppies) but few showed. Yet, the mall parking lots were jammed. (I think we should have fired-up our water bomber and given them all a good drenching).
What's wrong with people?

Those of us who are veterans, and the parents of active duty service members do remember. Our army son in Hawaii made a visit to the Missouri and the Arizona yesterday, out of respect for those who served before him.
Rich, ex-Navy DS1, served from 1967-1976.
