I have a vague memory that you needed the black rod that looks bent and holds the window open, one on each side. Maybe my vague memory is an illusion or even a delusion. If it is one and the same, I may have a spare or two somewhere and if so, let me know if the replacement never comes. I could send you a CARE package. We'll be on Vancouver Is. from Aug. 13 to 27, a short drive for you (although quite expensive ferry ride); stop in.

I may have asked this before... but is that the Vintage "rag?" As in EAA?

Gene, you are not hallucinating. Thanks for the offer to give me a couple of "arms" but since it is an insurance claim, might as well go for broke!
Love to meet someday, but dunno about August. You will be in a beautiful part of B.C.

Oil 'n water, that is not the vintage rag I toil over. Our is just an itty-bitting thing -about 500 subscribers, tops. But it is put together with a lot of TLC.

BE-35....isn't that colloquially known as the "doctor killer?"

Yes - mine is a "V-tailed" Doctor killer; the worst kind. (But, it's okay; I'm not a doctor!) But since it is a 1957 model, it is "vintage."

1957 would be considered relatively "new" at our hangar!

Yeah. But, then again, mine is made of aluminum* - not wood and fabric!

oil 'n water, my comment was one of admiration - not one upmanship. Your airplane had me drooling because......

I've seen worse at the San Diego Aviation museum basement shop. And they brought it back to shiny, fly able newness.

I did some work in Red Lake, Ontario and they are very proud of saying "there are more Norsemen in Red Lake than in Norway!" At first I thought your picture was of a Beaver in sad shape and that you must be involved in the restoration and the documentation. The Norseman is a classic and the airplane in your picture may look sad, but can fly again! A friend in Alaska re-built a Super Cub in his garage over a long winter and the only thing left from the original airplane was, literally, the data plate.

(And, FaN, I didn't take your comment any way at all negatively. The aviation community is very supportive of each other, I've found, I think perhaps because there are so very few... but that doesn't keep Piper, owners from being proud of their "rides" or Bonanza owners from poking fun at other planes that need more than two tail surfaces! Hmm... maybe sorta like vintage AS owners look at those newer (heavier!) models or Argosys (Argosies?) or B-Vans at AS Sprinters!)

That is indeed a Norseman. They say a dessicated bush pilot is behind those dirty windows.

I have indeed been privy to that aviation-related pride and support that you speak of.

You must have heard this - it's been making the hangar rounds:
Pilot's Prayer: If I die in my sleep, please don't let my wife sell my airplane for what I told her I paid for it.

Another old aviation joke:

"I want to die peacefully in my sleep, not yelling and screaming like his passengers."

I just saw some stats on private planes—the number of pilots is half what it was a generation ago and planes are far, far more expensive now than they used to be. I guess few can afford to buy one and although some can build or restore one, that is not all that common.

Gene, I believe those stats. Even though the hangars at our airfield are always full, it's a lot like Airstreaming. Many small airplanes are handed down from father to son/daughter. Many of those fathers/owners/operators are retired businessmen or airline pilots who generous pension plans - especially if they flew for our national airline when the going was good - and can afford to supplement the fuel/maintenance costs. When they die off, I doubt if their sons/daughters will be able to afford to pick-up those costs. My friend flies for a major airline, but he will never be able to afford his own airplane. Those lucrative benefits are long gone. He says a senior bus driver makes more than a F/O (First Officer) at his airline. (Bus, as in "Bus Stop" or Ralph Kramden - not an Airbus).

As to home-builts, that's another story; we have had a few donated to our organization, i.e. "My wife said if I go up in this thing again, she's going to leave."
We even had one crash land. The builder/owner/pilot survived, but walked away swearing and we never saw him again. We ended up turning it into a gate guard for our clubhouse!

Interesting discussions on flying....but, in the flying I did, I could only get one wheel off the ground at a time....sometimes at way over 100 mph...

Mine was bought in 1983, before my other half. It was always going to be "for the kids' tuition." Got both out of school a few years ago without selling. Daughter's college graduation gift was even flying lessons. Now when there is talk of selling, Daughter whispers "DON'T sell the Bonanza!"

Msmoto, not all of us are meant to have wings. Despite all my yapping about airplanes etc., I can't fly either! I enjoy listening to the real aviators, though - especially the real old timers.
