Tense can be tough when your tent is leaking in a rainstorm.

We are currently between trailers so, out of necessity, went tent camping for what I hope is the last time. We picked a week in the UP of Michigan that included, at no extra cost, steady rain for most of the day, every day. Only small intrusion of dampness thru the floor but by the end of the week EVERYTHING seemed damp, especially the sleeping bags.

Give me a nice, dry travel trailer any day!

I love those Hitchcock films. The cinematography is surreal.
I had to go and look for it on YouTube, once we started talking about it I had to have my fix. All is better now.

Understand.

I get one mother of a fix during my morning shower. (Except when I'm Airstreaming. Drat!)

Hey FaN,

Is that an actual shower curtain? I do believe it would encourage a record breaking short shower!

Chillingly yours,

Yes.

That's why I moved it to the guest bathroom; it curtails those annoying hot-water hogs.

I fear that shower curtain might give me bad dreams.

Back on the Road.....

....I'll wrap-up the Calgary story when I get home.

Right now I'm on a nostalgic little trip; am revisiting Sunshine Valley - in the verdant Cascade Mountains.

Two years ago the Breakfast Show slung its first hash from the road. What was on the menu? Coffee, cornflakes, turkey and gravy. Turkey and gravy?? Well, it was the Thanksgiving weekend.

I have spent every Thanksgiving weekend here since. The Rockies were magnificent, but I have an affinity for Cascadia.

The photo below was taken Thanksgiving weekend of 2011. The view from the FaN's bedroom this weekend is identical.

The trailer has received a ton of compliments. More than when she was bang spankin' new, three Thanksgivings ago. Two couples banged on the door and wanted to take a peak inside. One proclaimed, "You have the best trailer in the park," (and there were 90 rigs here until this morning). That's not why I bought it. I do not like to feel objectified in that way - but they were nice people. If they have their heart really set on owning an Airstream one day, I hope it happens for them. And I really hope they get a trailer as good as the FaN. Everything is performing well

It has been getting down to freezing at night. Boy, is it cold when I take the dog out at 5 a.m. As we make our way back to the trailer, there she is, squat and silver in the moonlight; the furnace purrs like a contented feline.

Happy Thanksgiving Canadian 'streamers. And to my American friends, Happy Thanksgiving (to be)!

p.s. Don't forget to put a splash of sherry in the gravy. Makes all the difference. (You know I had to say something about food!)

I take it this Thursday is Thanksgiving in Canada?

We spent our first November in our new Airstream on our first trip of some length in a snowbird campground in Phoenix on Thankgiving—only place we could find and it felt really weird. I was afraid some blue haired lady would knock on our door and ask why weren't we playing bingo. Barb the Omnivore cooked something like a veggie meatloaf (came frozen from some health food store) and made some other veggie things. I don't recall her being an omnivore that day. Somewhat later, I explained that any type of meatloaf is not what I dream about. Objectively, it was pretty dreadful (the other things were fine). But we had a great time on our first long trip in our new Airstream in this strange place—the veggie meatfloaf even kinda tasted good (not so much the next day, and a few days later I think it went in the garbage).

Haven't duplicated that Thanksgiving—and not sure there would be any way we could and that's not because of the veggie meatloaf.

Hope your traditional Thanksgiving is as good as our first Airstream one.

Gene

Hey Gene! Today is our official Thanksgiving. It is usually the 2nd or 3rd Monday in October. Most Canadian families have their turkey dinner on the Sunday. Thanksgiving Monday is usually a good day to relax at home (and enjoy the leftovers) before heading back to work or school on Tuesday.

I think most Airstreamers have vivid memories of their first trip. (And are good memories - for the most part).

I saw something in the store called "Tofurky" and thought of you. Have you tried it? Sorry to hear that your health-store "meatloaf" was a flop. "Amy's" products are pretty good, but I don't think they produce a meatless loaf.

It's pretty quiet in the park right now. As I wrote, most left today to get back to work/school tomorrow. Only about a dozen rigs are left, but the park was 90% full when I arrived on Saturday. Getting away for Thanksgiving is obviously very popular; the woman beside me was cooking her family's turkey outside in a convection oven and expounded, "We love getting away from the extended family bull_ _ _ _!" lol!

I'll soon be headed home too. The work awaits.

Hope your upcoming Thanksgiving is a joyous one - Tofurky or not!

Was Thanksgiving in Canada on Thursday a long time ago—I seem to remember it being the 4th Thursday in October, but recently, has it moved around? Does this have something to do with Red Green? Or not having paper money for $1?

Barb has made tofu in a turkey cookie mold—a turkey mold does not increase my enjoyment, but I know she is trying to include me in her celebration. Since, I, like most everyone, grew up with the usual Thanksgiving foods, not having a turkey makes it hard to recreate the memory. I think holidays like this and Christmas are about trying to relive memories and hope, if amongst family, no one does something ugly (I've never been at a dinner like that, but according to movies, there is no holiday dinner without drunks, insults, sex, fistfights; could that not be reality).

It can't feel like the Thanksgivings I remember, but I think it gives the opportunity tio make a new memory for the present and not the past.

So we create new traditions—enjoy yours and I have no idea what will happen for us—maybe Thanksgiving with friends, maybe together at home—whatever, it will be good.

Gene, since they got rid of that $1 and $2 bill, Canadians are so weighted down by pocket change that we find it hard to move around, period. So, I guess that's why they move around everything else.

I like what Arnold Schwarzenegger says about Thanksgiving: It's the only time you see natural breasts in L.A.

Barb sounds like a real sweetheart, but the Tofurky I was referencing is this: Turtle Island Foods, Tofurky Holiday Products

Horsin' Around at Calgary's Spruce Meadows

After my long day in the city, I am craving a bit of country. As they say, you can take the girl out of the country, but you can't take the.....you know how it goes. A tour of Spruce Meadows is eagerly anticipated.

Spruce Meadows is a show-jumping facility on the outskirts of Calgary. From humble beginnings in the early 1970s, it is now considered to be one of the premier equestrian sport facilities in the world; an equine Disneyland. International horses and riders compete there from all over the world.
http://www.sprucemeadows.com/

During a big competition, the big grandstand skirting the international arena will be filled with thousands of spectators....

The day I was there the place was deserted, but the pristine white fences and emerald paddocks stir the imagination. One can almost hear the thunder of hooves and the roar of the crowd. It's been a long time since I've felt the surge of a Thoroughbred between the legs, but the memory is still vivid.

Since Spruce Meadows is largely devoted to things that go up...and down....a visit to the Calgary Tower would meld well with the theme.

Next: Calgary Tower, the Wrap-Up, and a Midnight Drive Through the Rockies

Meet George Jetson, his boy Elroy, daughter Judy....and the Calgary Tower

So, what happened to the future?

Seattle's Space Needle.....
Space Needle - Seattle Landmark and Tourist Attraction

..... and the Calgary Tower.....
Calgary Tower » Calgary

.... remind me of something right out of the Jetsons.....

Both were designed in the early 1960s when the architects and city planners really thought we would be zooming around in the family's cosmic sedan by the 1980s. (Seattle still advertises its ride-to-the top admission as "The Price to Fly!") Ironically, both towers look outdated and slightly outrageous today.

But, the tourists still come - and it will cost you $19 and $14 respectively, "to fly."

What I like best about the Calgary Tower are the benches at the top. After purchasing your ticket, they don't mind if you sit around all day. (And unlike the cheap seats on the airline, there's more leg room). Those who do not have sore feet can do the 360 degree walk, of course. On a sunny day you can see clear to the Rockies. The brave of heart might even want to step out onto the glass platform....

......hey! You down there. Quit looking up my skirt!

But speaking of flying, this airplane geek really enjoyed the view of CYYC (Calgary International. The city's aviators refer to the Calgary Tower as the Husky Tower, so it is not confused with air traffic control). The top o' the tower is indeed a good place to do a bit of plane spotting. A lot of those airplanes sport a white, blue, and teal livery, since Calgary is the hub of WestJet, or the little airline that could. WestJet copied Southwest's game plan, and is now the second largest airline in Canada.

Anyway, after I got my fill of airplanes, the stomach tells me I am hungry. I wonder if the tower designers installed any of those futuristic vending machines where Jane Jetson could serve-up a hot meal in a nanosecond? I don't see any - but there's a sit-down restaurant with real waiters. I take a peek at the menu. The prices are exponential to the elevation. High! I have grown rather accustomed to my economical made-in-the trailer meals. Dinner will have to wait until I get back to the park.

Riding back down in the elevator, I'm still thinking about food, Jetsons style. hmmmmmmmm..... what does astronaut ice-cream really taste like?

Next: The Wrap-up, Going Weird, and that Midnight Drive Through the Rockies.

Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows?

Of course!

Do you wear patent-leather shoes? The nuns told us to never dance with a guy wearing those kinds of shoes (while skirted).

Memories......
