The Second Annual Campy Filmfest.....cont'd.....

...featuring Hot Rods to Hell (1967)

The Plot: While on a business trip just before Christmas, Tom Phillips (Dana Andrews) gets into a car accident, which was caused by the reckless driving of the other car involved. Although Tom suffered no paralysis from his back injury, he did come out of the accident with a chronic back problem which results in him not being able to continue with his current work, and a mental block having anything to do with the accident, including Christmas music, driving in general and the sounds of screeching tires and breaking glass. The Phillips - Tom, his wife Peg Jeanne Crain) and their two children, teenager Tina and pre-teen Jamie - end up moving from their Boston home and buying a motel in Mayville in the California desert. Tom would be physically able to do the work required running a motel, and the dry heat is good for his back. But as they approach Mayville, they encounter a bunch of reckless hot rodders named Duke, Ernie and Gloria. Since Tom scolds them about their reckless behavior, they decide to make the Phillips' lives miserable by terrorizing them using their souped up vehicle. They also end up finding out where the Phillips' ultimate destination is. But as their string of altercations comes to a head, the process which includes Tina's teen-aged infatuation with Duke, the Phillips have to figure out how best to protect themselves, Tom who knows they can't outrun the souped up hot rod, or out "chicken" the crazed Duke.

Why HRTH Made the So Bad, It's Good List:

#1
The Chick Magnet Cars:

From right to left, a street-legal jalopy roadster, the classic '58 'vette, the indomitable '57 Chevy.....and Herman with the Munstermobile......

#2
The Tagline: Call them punks, call them animals... but you better get out of their way!

Really? "Duke" and "Ernie" are so clean-cut that they could pass for an Amway representative.....

#3
The Over-Acting:

Jeanne Crain clutches her chest, gasps, cries, screams.....

And screams......

And screams through two-thirds of the movie....

Could anyone truly be that terrified, or she was she merely frustrated? (Because of hubby's bad back, she wasn't getting any.....you know).....

"Give him the Robaxacet!"

#4
The Oxford English Screenwriting.....
"They're gonna' keep chickening us, that's what they're gonna' do! They wanna' crack us up!"

And..... "All girls are nuts."

#5
The Music at the Arena - Mickey Rooney Jr. and His Cheeseburger Combo:
Mickey Rooney Jr. and His Combo (1 of 2) - YouTube

#6
The Big Crash Scene:

Cars flipping at 90 miles an hour, smoke, fire, mayhem......and the only injury is a sprained wrist.....

Finally, if you disagree with my assessment of the film, that is fine.

I'm a girl.

"All girls are......"

Hi massey, a few more blasts from across the Strait should help the thaw.

I Almost Forgot - Not!

Unloved? Recently dumped? Stood up by a jerk? Can't get him to pose the question? Or maybe you just hate the love day, period.

Presenting the Second Annual Valentine's Day Rally for the Embittered.

Date: February 14, 2013.
Time: 7 p.m. (I know, I know, it doesn't give you much time, but the gas pedal is a good outlet for that repressed rage. You'll make it!)

Place: The FaN driveway (behind the barn). You've heard all about it. Now you can live the experience too - but watch where you step.

Dress: Who cares? Look your worse. You've given up on relationships, so wear those black polyester "fat pants," then spend the next two months filling them out.

Schedule of Events:

"Whine" and Cheese Meet and Cry Party

Airstream Open House: A creative challenge - decorate your Airstream to suit the mood. Here are some decorating tips that will be appreciated by all:
- dangle cupids with little nooses around their necks from the ceiling
- black hearts look great on the Airstream skin
- lotsa dead flowers in and around your Airstream
- and never ever pair-up those plastic-flamingo icons. One sad-looking solo flamingo only!

The Ever-Popular Airstream Potluck:
Please bring....
- jerk chicken
- cocktail bitters
- frozen T.V. dinners to go with the cold, cold hearts
- chicken wings (to chomp out the frustration of wasting all that time with those non-committal types) over-salted, of course, to rub more salt into the wound
- sour cherry pie
- heart-shaped cookies (broken into pieces)

Pinata Smash: (shaped like a cupid) to beat the crap out of followed by an essay contest, "Hitched Forever - Why I Will Never Love Anything but My Airstream Again."

The winner will receive gas money for the third annual Valentine's Day Airstream Rally for the Embittered.

See you there -- I mean here!

Happy Valentine's Day Fly!!!!!!!!!!

I would be so happy to attend your Rally but, because Valentines falls on a Friday this year, I am unable to get my 50% Seniors Discount to travel on a BC Ferry today. (Discount only Tues. to Thur. and used to be 100%) Looks like I will not be able to go next year or the next either.
But I will be there Valentines Day 2017 for sure as it falls on Tuesday.

I'll bring that bottle of Ontario wine I picked up in Sept. It will be aged well by then and we will be able to celebrate the day in style.

See you then.

A rally a year ago must be hard to get to—check your date above. I guess men aren't really invited to the embittered women's rally, I live too far away and I'm happily married. But glad to see you back here. Movie sounds great and I think it appears on late night TV sometimes.

massey, well, you can cancel that Tuesday ferry reservation (ditto for Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday). Why? Because you are happily married. I do not want any stinkin' happily marrieds within 100 miles of my Valentine's party for the embittered!

Gene, even if you moved closer, the same goes for you. And you get another demerit point for being so *&%$# observant!

Now, are you still happy I'm back?

Your Valentine wish can not be granted Fly! Google maps says I am 92.8 miles from you every day of the week.

We'd come if we wanted to as an example of a happily married couple—to provide balance. But the time machine is in the shop (one of those cranky Airstream options that don't work very well) and when we get it back, we'll show up in 2012.

Maybe you can become embuttered instead of embittered. Bring a barrel of butter to the next rally, turn up the heat, and get at it. It is the pathway to healing. The next year, add jelly.

Please post photos.

Still happy you're back. The Forum is so dull without you.

Gene, I agree that FaN is tops; without her, we're left with "spirited" discussions regarding hitches, tow vehicles, tires and guns!
