Today's the day! Flying to Paris, catching a train tomorrow morning to Bayonne, and from there to St Jean pied de port. Two nights in St Jean at a Refugio Beilari Basque.
From there the Orisson and arriving in Roncessvalle August 1st. As you can see I am easing into this adventure...many hit St Jean then up and over the Pyrennes in one day!

Two days to Roncessvalles is very sensible, particularly if you hit a period of hot weather. We started April 12 last year and took two days on the lower route, overnighting in Valcarlos. We wanted to do the high route but it was still closed due to snow.
Have a great Camino!

Ecstasy!
A rare respite -
listening to Gregorian chant under the supermoon.

Greetings from the Camino!
FaN I listened to that glorious Gregorian chanting early this morning, and as soon as I got on the Camino met the first Canadian in two weeks... A holy coincidence?
Hoping GPO will post more pictures as I don't have the savvy to do so.
Crossing the Pyrennes from France to Spain was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. Absolutely gorgeous! Seeing the monastery in Roncesvalles from high up in the mountains, and imagining how pilgrims over many centuries must have felt when they first saw it, was special.
From there we traveled to Zubiri then Pamplona. Great tapas or pinchos in Basque Country. Hardest day was climbing the Hill of Pardon. As we walked through the small towns we met pilgrims of all ages from many countries. Many Italians and Spaniards do the Camino on bike "bicigrinos".
Had two wonderful days in Logrono. Marvelous wine in the Rioja region and a vibrant foodie scene on San Juan and Calle Laurel.
Unique to Spain are this small cafe bars in even the tiniest towns.
They serve coffee along with beer on tap and all kinds of whiskey and wine
with small plates of tasty savory snacks. And not expensive! Less for a glass of tinto and 3 different tapas than a cup of coffee at Starbucks!
So I have suggested to Sean that he open a cafe bar in New Orleans ...think it would go over well there!
Anyway the whole commonality between this Camino experience and airstreams- for those of you who are likely wondering- is that both are
about freedom of movement, enjoying the beauty of the world outdoors, meeting new people, and sharing a meal and an adventure!
Walking from Najera to Santo Domingo tomorrow.
For now looking for a cafe bar for a glass of clara- beer mixed with fresca...
Sounds disgusting but wildly popular here. Most refreshing after a long walk!

I didn't know where to put this photo that my son just sent me from Jasper, Alberta. FAN I hope you don't mind.
He sent me others; boon docking on the Banks of the North Saskatchewan River near Rocky Mountain House, Alberta and resting beside the David Thomson Highway on the Kootenay Plains. He will be heading back east soon, but I sense that he really needed to get close to the land of his birth area in order to feed his sole. He also managed to stop into Rearguard Falls where the salmon are performing their farewell tour.
I just love the way the Globetrotter shyly presents herself to the magnificent iron steam locomotive, neither able to acknowledge the other's beauty but certainly well aware that they share a very special ability to create extraordinarily strong feelings.
And the Jeep does her job.

Jim, I don't mind. You resurrected many good memories from last year's trip to Alberta.
