That was really great. I am usually pretty jaded about such things, but that was clever, generous and just well done at every level. Thanks for posting that, it's my favorite Christmas shtick of this season!

Hi, should have asked for a big screen TV instead of underwear and socks.

More Spirit of the Season - The Kindness of Strangers

Bob Erb, from Terrace, B.C., has given away one-third of his 25M lottery win to organizations and people who "need a little help."

Oh....he did buy something for himself, though: an Airstream trailer (towards the end of the video).

Good going, Bob!

Awwwww.

Always nice to see these stories.

At the close of every NBC Nightly News is a "Making a Difference" segment, where individuals are showcased who use their energy, imagination, talent, good-heartedness , etc., to do something good/make a difference in the world. Love it.

Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world. (Desmond Tutu)

Glad it chipped away at some of that jadedness (which I also tend to subscribe to).

The video now has 28M hits.

The "Making a Difference" segments sound similar to Charles Kuralt's "On the Road" series.

I have a DVD that features some of the most-popular segments. My favourite is about a man in one of the southern states who spends his retirement buying and fixing up used bicycles for poor kids. He turned his garage into a no-fee bicycle lending service. The kids check out the bikes in the morning and bring them back at night. Every bike is returned - faithfully!

The everyday kindness of the back roads more than makes up for the acts of greed in the headlines.
- Charles Kuralt

The best of the season to you and yours, Maggie.

And the best of the Holidays to you, as well, FaN.

We got the travel bug listening to Charles Kuralt on Saturday mornings, while cleaning the house.

He described New Orleans, the Minnesota Northwoods, etc,, and we vowed to see those places one day.

One day came, we worked hard, the kids grew up and moved out....then the stars aligned and we retired to follow in his footsteps.

How fortunate we all are.

Yes, it is easy to forget all some of us have when we have our own troubles, and easy to forget those who are not doing well at all.

Happy holidays.

Hopefully most of us will take a moment this holiday season to think of those who struggle and maybe even offer a helping hand.

If you're looking for a wonderful organization to make a donation that will truly be used for helping those in need, I might suggest the Salvation Army. Aside from our church, it's the only organization that I fully support.

I prefer one on one charity with no middle man taking a cut. The March of Dimes spent less than 10% on the purpose of the organization and why does the Red Cross need an over $250,000 salary for the top executive?

Charity to me is about helping another being (even the dog on the street). It is not about enriching a few individuals who might pass a few crumbs to those in need while they eat steak.

One reason I avoid United Way. Instead, I select charities based on my own circumstances, and give directly to them.

American Diabetes Association because I'm diabetic, and I'm all for supporting organizations that promote the search for a cure.

American Heart Association because my father benefitted from a triple bypass, artificial heart valve, and pacemaker to make it all the way to age 84 instead of dying in his sixties.

There are many good, generous people here.

Another random act of kindness was featured on the local news. A man, obviously homeless, was crouched on a city street; he was ignored by dozens of Christmas shoppers carrying bags from the city's most expensive shops. One shopper could not walk by. He stopped and asked the homeless man if he could buy him a meal.

As it turned out, the man was not homeless at all. It was a dupe. He asked the shopper how much his monthly rent or mortgage was, then pulled out enough cash to cover the shopper's December rent, and gave it to him.

Two random acts of kindness - with an unexpected twist.

Getting Back to the WestJet Video.....

It has now reached 31M hits. The Make a Wish Foundation is going to benefit handsomely from this, as the airline is committed to donating "X" amount of money/"X" number of hits.

One of my friends flies for said airline. He didn't say much about the video. When I asked him why, he said he's just the co-pilot and is only supposed to say three things:
"You're on fire."
"Nice landing, Captain. Let me buy the drinks tonight."
And finally....."I'll take the fat one."

This is an old aviation joke, apparently, but I've never heard it before.

Meanwhile, Back on the Driveway

I'm bad about monitoring the propane. Keep meaning to start a useage log.

Ran out of propane a couple of times this winter. Maybe it's the Swede in me, but I was relatively comfortable sleeping. I attribute this to a heated mattress pad. There has been no condensation build-up on the inside either (with or without the furnace). I don't know why there isn't - thought this was a big problem - although I don't cook in the trailer over the winter. I only sleep in it.

We had a good snowfall; the trailer was covered in snow. Even w/o the furnace, it seemed warmer inside. Snow obviously has insulative properties - even on an Airstream. The water bottle beside my bed wasn't frozen as hard this a.m.

Some of you may think I'm still nuts.

Oh well.

Not nuts, only light headed. And you really should have that looked at.

Or maybe I should just stay away from ceiling fans.
