I'm not going to post a larger version of mine; Ugly goes up proportionally to the increase in area…

Dennis Weaver used to live near Ridgway, Colo., about 85 miles from Crawford and several miles from Ouray. After he died, the family pit up a large sculpture of an Eagle on a hiking trail that goes north from the town.
We'll be camping between the 2 towns for several days later this week.

Thanks for the interesting bit of celebrity trivia.
Gene "Hackman" frequents a diner in New Mexico called Harry's Roadhouse. He is retired from acting, apparently. Boy, wouldn't he be a great guy to sit down over a burger with!
Happy camping, Gene!

Living closer to me is Joe Cocker and his wife Pam. They're about 6 miles away and if I look really, really hard, I can see their roof. Pam used to have a restaurant in Crawford called the Mad Dog Fountain Cafe. Not enough business around here to keep it going and it closed about 7 or 8 years ago. They did a wonderful job decorating it. I see them occasionally eating out and have met them, but they never invite me to their parties. They have contributed to a foundation that helps local kids.
Joe is still doing concerts (mostly overseas where he is better known and more popular) and may still be recording. The Joe Cocker of Woodstock fame no longer drinks and hasn't for many years—no more shakes.
I also met the lead singer with a rock group 40 years ago, but can't remember his name or the group. We did get loaded together. And I spent a few hours drinking with Keith Carradine in a NYC bar in 1968. He told me a story about how he had been wronged by a famous groupie. Years later when I was watching the movie Nashville, he sang a song which told the same story. That was a surprise.
My last celebrity story is that I saw Abbie Hoffman in Barnes and Nobel in Greenwich Village in the mid '60's—he was looking at the display for his book, "Steal This Book" on a low shelf. When he stood up, he whacked his head on another shelf and then looked around with a sheepish grin to see if anyone had seen him. I did. That concludes my celebrity stories for now.

Gene, you remind me of that song.... I once danced with a man who danced with a girl who danced with the Prince of Wales.
Abbie Hoffman? What a scream.
I'm sure the rocker you got "loaded with" can't remember your name either!
Here in Hollywood North, the only celebrity I have seen was Ned Beatty.
But I just missed one of my favourite comedians, the late John Candy, during the filming of Who's Harry Crumb? (They shot this scene at a marina close to YVR.)
I loved the man.

Gene Hackman's western home is in our subdivision (not Arizona). A very private person whom I have never seen at the neighborhood HOA meetings. He does smile and wave while driving his Land Rover in/out of the subdivision. Glad he and his family have some piece and quiet.
I think it would be an major pain in the backside to live in the "Gold Fish Bowl" many movie/singers etc find themselves in after a certain level of success.

I'm sure of it too.
If you live long enough, there are so many "celebrities" getting their 15 minutes of fame that you have to meet some at some point in your life. I've met a lot of politicians too, but they didn't used to be "celebrities". Now we have celebrity politicians, a strange breed of needy people (yes, I'm thinking of Anthony Weiner).

You have my deepest sympathy, and I hope you recover soon from your ordeal.
Oh, if only politicians these days understood the vast philosophical difference between "politician" and "statesman"! Anybody here remember how long ago it was that we had a statesman running things?

Actually, a lot of the politicians I've met were truly trying to do something they thought would improve things. They sometimes got co-oprted by the system, sometimes they were wrong, but sometimes they were right. Having been involved in a number of non profits, the politics there can get nasty and if you want to get anything done, you have to work with people you don't agree with and don't like. After a while, you time out—if you want to reform things, resents fester and people just get tired of looking at you. It isn't easy being a leader.
And, just like your tag line says Pro', emergencies occur all the time and often don't get resolved while another emergency occurs. Changing things gets swallowed by emergencies and turning emergencies into opportunities is not easy either.
I have been involved in the planning process as a local planning committee members for years in a county where planning is avoided. I always lose the votes, but my approach gets heard and does affect final outcomes. I try to get along with opponents and after a while they listen to me and small, incremental changes occur. You have to be patient and to get involved.

You mentioned Abby Hoffman. The irony is that the hippies/yippes thought they could change things, but were also viewed as a strange breed. The counterculture's quest for that gonzo utopia dissipated, but many facets became mainstream.
I often wonder if those counterculturists view that dissipation with regret....or relief?
