daveswenson, actually, it was a furloughed pilot who had too much time on his hands that got me onto the hard stuff (Dr. Pepper and Cool Whip) when the beer ran out.

Hand flying....indeed!

She's Incorrigible!

The furloughed ones are my favourite.

You can fly 'em day or night.

Hey FaN,

Saw the Bowlus last night. Spent three hours with it and its creators, John Long and Helena Mitchell. In a word - it is stunning. The exterior shape is very aerodynamic and the interior is beautiful with real birch paneling and floor, brass screens, top end appliances and a very innovative heating system. The layout is excellent, with the lounge/dining area separate from the galley kitchen. The bath/shower is between the lounge/dining area and the bedroom, which is extremely comfortable.

It has stabilizer jacks, a "jockey" tongue jack wheel and a nice step and handle to aid entrance and egress. We towed it with their Saab convertible and, at 2,000 pounds, it tows like a dream. That was the most surprising thing to me - I had no idea the light weight would make such a difference. You clearly can tow this with any modern car with no issues. No need for a weight distribution, sway control hitch or extended mirrors.

It is smaller inside than our 23' FB AS Serenity even though the over-all length is about the same. Because of the Bowlus layout it is more useable and comfortable than our AS.

The construction quality and materials (2024 aluminum) are impeccable. This thing is built to last - all aluminum construction with an essentially sealed underside.

The Bowlus is definitely a head-turner. We were debating whether to upgrade to a 27' or 28' AS but seeing the Bowlus has scrambled the equation!

John,

Wow! Your enthusiasm resonates from the screen.

That's quite the "predicament." (And one any trailer enthusiast wouldn't mind being in.)

As much as I am drooling over the thought of you and your significant other "going for it," I hate the possibility of losing an Airstream friend and enthusiast.

You have some serious thinking to do now, John.

Thinking.....dreaming.......thinking......dreaming ....as those delectable visions of Bowlus and Airstream float through your head.....

Thank-you for that insider's view. I wish Bowlus was in Canada. I don't know if it would suit my long-term needs, but I sure would be looking it over.

I am excited for you - whatever your decision may be!

Hi FaN,

Wouldn't owning a Bowlus, given its early "link" to Airstream, provide at least the possibility of staying a member of Air Forums??

BTW, their factory is currently still in Toronto but they are relocating to Southern california and will be tooling up there. They may continue to make frames in Toronto but I'm not totally clear on that. I think Toronto is on the other side of the country from you however.

Best regards,

John S.

Top be a Forum member, you don't have to own an Airstream. You can own a Bowlus or any other or no RV. You can even be homeless so long as you can access the internet.

The Bowlus sounds pretty nice and I think I looked at promo info on it some time ago. How's the price compared to Airstream.

Gene,

Thanks for the clarification and for the possibility of staying active in the Air Forums, which I thoroughly enjoy. As far as pricing goes, it is expensive - $100k. It's 23' long and is considerably costlier than our 23' Int'l. Serenity. We are looking at a 27' Classic which, for 2014, would be about the same $100k but with the possibility of a discount of say 10%, the discount getting smaller as demand increases and supply stays relatively static.

Whew! I am relieved.

John, how about buying both? (Oh boy, what a vicarious thrill that would be!)

C'mon. We're here for a good time......

Well FaN,

To answer your intriguing question, were we to buy both then we would likely be homeless and, more importantly, too poor to access the internet and therefore ineligible to participate in the Air Forums, to my everlasting regret!

But John, you could access the Forum at a library and maybe take a nap there too. Homelessness doesn't have to prevent you from participating.

If you don't buy a Classic and do buy a FC, you could buy a new tow vehicle too for a total of $100 K. That's pretty much what we did in 2007 and then have put some money into the Safari to upgrade it.

Hi Gene,

I like your line of reasoning. Any solution that potentially leads to a nap (in the library) has my full attention!
