When we were discussing the broken AS deadbolt recently, you wrote something to the effect -- I would not not want it to come open in transit. My friend said you must have flown the Piper Navajo; their doors were notoriously bad for popping open inflight. That's got to be a pretty scarey aviation thing too!

If you are ever heading east (or west) through Chilliwack, B.C., on the Trans-Canada highway and the skies are clear, you will glimpse Mt. Slesse to the south.

Mt. Slesse is colloquially referred to as "The Fang" - with good reason.
On December 9th, 1956, Sleese's jagged peak took a bite out of commercial aviation when a Trans-Canada Airlines Northstar slammed into its eastern face, killing all 62 souls onboard.

Cause of the crash was never determined, but the pilot reported wing icing and engine failure. Ironically, the pilot had survived many bombing missions during WW2, but it is not unusual for the weather and mountains of B.C. to claim the most experienced aviators - especially in the 1950s when aviation was in its relative infancy.

Despite a valiant effort by the civilian members of the Chilliwack Flying Club and the military to locate the wreckage, it was not until the Spring of 1960 when one of Canada's most revered woman mountain climbers reached the Northstar. The coroner, accident investigators, and RCMP were then air-lifted to the site. Due to the altitude and weather conditions, the victims and wreckage were left on the mountain.

Rumours soon circulated within the community that one of the passengers was carrying $80,000 in cash and gold. Some "ambitious," if not greedy citizens climbed to the site and pilfered the wreckage during the summer months when the ice and snow had melted. Not surprisingly, if the cash and gold was found, it was not reported. However, other ghoulish souvenirs - personal belongings of the passengers - were brought down and passed around the town watering holes on a Friday night. As one disgusted resident commented, some of those living at the foot of these mountains should be ashamed to look up.

The relatives of the victims eventually petitioned the government to declare the crash area as a memorial site. Those who violate the area are subject to penalty.

A propeller cairn and memorial plaque still stands on the mountain, and can be accessed via the Mt. Slesse Memorial Trail.

No. They tend to concentrate on not flying into those cumulus-granite clouds.

Yes. I wrote a story about it years ago (which was quite different from the above blurb - injected a lot more creative licence)!

No I never flew the Navajo, although I do have almost 100 hours in planes with propellers. But suicide doors on high speed vehicles just seems like a bad idea.

Since Airstream is the la-dee-dah of trailers, I've had to revamp the wardrobe - make the correct fashion statement. I wouldn't want to embarrass my fellow 'streamers.

Found these pants at the thrift store and couldn't resist. The former owner must have been all of 4' high.....but they are just the right pedal pusher length for yours truly.

I absolutely love them!

My idea of proper Airstreamer attire is hospital scrubs. I found some by Dickies that have extra pockets, in half a dozen different colors.

They're lightweight, cool and comfy, dry quickly if you get rained on (or if you roll your kayak accidentally), and you can use them for anything from trips to the grocery store, to engine repair in place of coveralls, to pajamas. No one thinks twice when they see someone wearing scrubs in public.

But don't make the mistake of getting those drafty backless gowns instead! You want to dress like the hospital staff, not like the patients!

Not my style.

As a retired, no-longer-business-suit-wearing man, I have an extensive wardrobe for Airstreaming and any place else.

I have jeans—new, old, paint spattered, oil and grease colored, torn, worn, too big (been losing weight on purpose) and stone washed (much too stylish for me, but they fit). Doesn't "jeans" have a nice sound? A plural me.

My shirt approach—always buy long sleeved because they can be rolled up in the summer. Snaps are faster than buttons, thus western style shirts are efficient and economical.

My wife has a different approach which takes 3/4 of our bedroom closet.

Hi, I have a pair of dark blue sweatpants and a light weight silver jacket; These are perfect for a quick cover up when Boo-Boo suddenly decides that he needs to go out early in the morning. Other than that, I never wear sweatpants.

Oh, and don't forget to bring a couple of Poop Bags".

I have been A A&P mechanic for over 60 years and still working as you can see in one of the photos.
You may have seen the yellow tail C-130 as it is used in Commercials like you cant stop a trane AC and you will see it soon in a GMC truck commercial.
Hope you dang young whippersnappers know all the aircraft in the photos.
