Welcome to the Breakfast Show.......

If everyone operating drones acted in a responsible manner, I totally agree.

However, there was a recent incident when a Lufthansa aircraft narrowly missed a drone flying too high in the approach to LAX. The Lufthansa heavy had to dodge the drone. They still have not found the drone operator.

Registering drones is probably not the best answer.

I would not have wanted to ride that maneuver as a passenger.

And, in view of the number of fools in the ham radio hobby, I doubt a drone flying license is the answer either. Sometimes fools are too clever for our public good. Regulations probably won't help, but if you can trace the wreckage back to the owner, at least that particular fool can be brought to justice. (Late, but better than never)

And yeah, someone's drone flying in my back yard WILL be the subject of a 'snap landing' if I can arrange it. I love the video of a chimpanzee taking one out with nothing other than a long stick. I have better technology. A bit of Ham radio on the right frequency, and down it goes.....

I made that comment months ago and took some flak (no pun intended). But there is something to be said for a shotgun, as Mr. Biden so eloquently stated.

Yeah, but the pellet fallout down range is not pleasant. The nice thing about electronic warfare is that it leaves little collateral damage if done right.

Besides, high tech intrusions need a high tech solution....or a long stick.

Jaws....about the same effect as a Yagi antenna aimed at a drone, driven by 1500 watts.....

But, doubtful this would be legal...

We were zeroing in the fire control radar on a late WW II destroyer DD 849 (in late 1966) and were aimed at a spar buoy about four miles away. A seagull landed on the buoy just as the radar switched from wide beam to narrow beam. Within a few seconds, the internals of the seagull were microwaved enough that he fell into the water and became fish bait.

I think a similar device would work well on these small drones......

Welcome to the Breakfast Show.......

The ship I was on had a search radar that could easily do that...an output somewhere north of several megawatts in a narrow beam. We used to demonstrate the hazard by taking seagulls out of the air at great distances by pointing at them and going to full power. We were very, very careful working around that radar antenna. The high power tube that generated the pulses produced X-rays at one end and that was surrounded by lead blocks for shielding....nasty.

For a drone, all you have to do is put out enough power to stop it from receiving commands. It goes out of control, and would typically land hard. Good enough. Swatting it with a shovel at that point would be sufficient.

The flying friend's fear has been realized. A drone collided with an airliner somewhere in the EU a few days ago. No significant damage, injuries or fatalities (this time).

Have a safe trip, friend.

Just wait until one of the military/cia drones now flying all over the US hits an airliner. That will be a much different ending.

I see a movie in the works:
Airport 2016.

On a happier note, Airstream was one of the companies featured on CBC's

Yup. Little toy drones can be an issue. Their presence is not a good thing in the flight path.

The bigger military ones are much more than something that may just scuff paint or dent part of the bigger aircraft. I'm not sure engine testing includes ingesting drones. They do feed them birds of assorted sizes to determine that the engine will not screw up the airframe under those conditions.
