What's Currently Blasting From the FaN's Speakers......

Up late in the FaN trying to reply to a nasty letter to the editor. (I didn't plug his little airplane company enough in last).

Go ahead and give it to me....

Subservience sucks.

Why are they called "ham" radios?

Origin of "ham"

I think in the early days of voice transmission, called "phone" vs, Morse code, the telegraph operators used the pejorative term "ham" to describe the phone radio operators suggesting their "ham fisted" techniques were not adequate to perform the task of communications via Morse code.

Thus it eventually became the short hand for amateur radio operators to be called "hams".

Thank you wikipedia.

And, nice to be back on the breakfast club...with a photo from our recent Alumalina 2016.....

Thanks, MsMo. Was wondering if they liked to sing/perform over the waves, and that's why it's called "ham" radio.

Great to see you at the Breakfast Show table again.

Love your neon flamingoes (and visitor).

Jim, model a/c flying is a huge hobby attracting the young and old. I did not know it attracted so many vets - good to hear. Many former civilian pilots are also involved.
The upswing - these model a/c pilots are responsible. Many recreational drone operators are not. My friend, who flies for an airline, is terrified a drone will come through the windscreen someday.

Unfortunately, many helicopter companies who catered to the film/commercial marketing companies are losing out to drones too.

Drone at Alumalina

Here is a drone operator at Alumalina recently...and he is a pilot. Thus, a very good understanding of what is required to operate an aircraft with safety concerns...

IMO, to fly a drone should require a license of some type as the potential risks to many are very high if not done with an understanding of the activity.

Registration is more than enough. At some point we have to get Government to stop being our mother.
